J. R.—I would like to know

Ans.:—Your hoy friend is un

However, if you tell him, that
will be a sure way to find out
if his feelings are sincere or
not—It would be much better

Prove Asres Of
Petitioners
Expect Only A Few Negroes
To Benefit
Montgomery, Ala., Jan. ll.ANP
Although old Bibles, "plantation
books” giving an account of the
slaves trades and other ancient
records have been brought up to
prove the antiquity of many Ne
gro old age pension petitioners. It
seems unlikely that many will
share its benefits because State
Commissioner A. H. Collins stat
ed that only between 8,000 and
10,000 of both races would be able
to qualify in 1936, despite more
than 36,000 applictions already
er 66 -tresaront(
received from persons over sixty
five years of age.
Collins, head of the state wel
fare department, based his esti
mate largely on trends in other
states with similar statutes. Ac
cording to the census, there are ap
proximately 106,000 people in Al
abama 66 or over. Pensions can
go only to those in desperate cir
cumstances whose income is less
than $360 a year, in which class
nearly all the elderly Negros
would fall.
The local bureau of welfare has
received “plantation books” from
Negroes, In one of which was a
list of free-born children. A check
revealed a few are now employed
on Montgomery WPA projects de
spite their age. One of the appli
cants offered a wooden-backed,
hand-carved Bible to prove his
age of 114, and it was accepted
because welfare officials said
"there’s no way of refuting it.”
Maximum benefits of successful
applicants will be $30 monthly.
to do?
Ans. 1—I would advise you
■ to specialize in one certain kind
of work, instead of doing one
thing then an another—A
course in designing or c'thor
j interior decorating would prove
to he helpful to you in making
something out of yourself.
A. N. M.—Ts my hoy friend
on the way back ns lie said he
was?
Ans.:—TTe told you he wns
coming hack just, to please you
hut he has no intentions of do-‘
ing so. TTe won't do an you tell
him or anyone else, ho don’t
rely on him too much.
M. It.—T)o you think my
luek will he any better during
this year than it. was in I9.‘lf>?
Ans.:- Your luck will he eon
siderablv better—I am happy
to predict that you’ll get
enough money to pay on the
hill which is duo the later part
of January, although you
won’t be able to pay it in full.
B. M. L.—If we get a lawyer,
do you think he can help us
anyt
Ans.:—Tt will only be a
waste of money—This case con
cerning your lost property has
already been settled and there
ip nothing you can do about it.
The property which was once
yours has already been Bold
twice since it was in your*
hands.
T. L.—Will singing mean
anything to me in the futureT
Ans..—Yes— but just as a
side line. Your main telent is
dancing and you’ll make your
“bread and butter” that way,
but your singing will help you
along toward a better success.
I*. S>.—Please tell me if if
will cause hard feelings for me
to return to the city I have in
mindf
Ans.:—ft won’t cause any
hard feelings for you to return
to Chicago, although the people
there will regret to have you
leave them—It is my impres
sion that your health will be im
proved enough for you to make
this trip about April of thus
year.
F. C.—Please tell me if I
will ever find a girl that will
marry mef
Ans.:—Don’t let your age
worry you for forty five is not
a bit too old to get married
again, and there are plenty of
wise middle aged women that
would like to marry a man of
your type—There’ll be another
marriage for you, but you
shouldn’t consider matrimony
until your business picks up a
little—Remember that you still
have four daughters the are de
penden upon you.
Senate Rseolution
Calls For Lynching
Inquiry
Wasnihgton, Jan. 11—Point
ing to the apparent failure of
state and local ( law enforce
ment vehicles to prevent lynch
ing and punish those respon
sible, Senator Frederick Van
Nuya (D-Ind.) announced Jan
uary 1 that he intends to intro
jduce a resolution, calling for
an investigation of the fourteen
lynchings which have oceured
in the United States since May
first.
Senator Van Nuys called at
tention to the fact that during'
the debate on the motion to
consider the Costigan-Wagner j
anti-lynching bill, which con-j
tineed from April 26 until May
1, various members of the Sen
ate made statements to the ef
fect that Federal legislation
against lynching is unnecessary
as the sattes can and will pre
vent lynchings and punish
those responsible, for this mob
violence.
Yet, despite these statements
there have oeeure din the Unit
ed States, since the close of the
debate on May 1st, at least
fourteen lynehings of both
white and Negro citizens.
In view of this circumstance,
the Senator intends, by means
of this Resolution, to havp the
Senate authorize the committee
on the Judiciary, or any sub
committee thereof, to investi
gate fully the facts and cir
eumsancca surrounding the j
fourteen lynehings which have
occured, including the relation
ship of these acts of violence
to other crimes and a conse
quent depreciation in the main
tenance of law and order.
The eonimittce to make the
investigation shall report its
findings to the Senate at the
earliest practical date, not lat
er than March 1st, 1936, which
will, it in he’iicved, provide an
authoritative and reliable basis
for further consideration of
anti-lynching legislation.
The announcement by Senat
or Van Nuys that he would in
troduce such a resolution creat
ed ft flurry of interest in the
capital since it is well known
that the anti-lynching legisla
tion is one of those controver
sial subjects which many legis
lators would like to keep much
in the background. The move
was regarded in many quarters
as an excellent strategic one
which will focus the attention
of the nation upon the manner
in which the states have dealt
with the crime of lynching. It
is regarded as praticularly val
uable that this information for
the first time will have the
stamp of an official govern
ment inquiry and thereore will
not bo able to be dismissed on
grounds that it is “propaganda
