OZE SIMMONS OF IOWA;
A GENUINE ALL-AMERICAN
By Willard Evans
(For ANP)
Chicago, Nov. 16, (ANP)—
Doff your caps to one Oze Sim
mons of Iowa, the first genuine
Negro candidate for All-Ameri
can football honors since the days
of Brico Taylor and Duke Slater.
I say that without reservation,
even though the nances of Willis
Ward, Manuel Rivero, Dave My
Fitzhugh Lyons, Benjamin,
Bell, etc., immediately loom like
writing in an azure noonday sky.
Good men all, but they lacked the
stuff.
Whenever a Negro gridster
makes the first learn at o ne of
the larger institutions of the
Higher Yearning ( and since the
depression with f.w jobs for the
grads, Yearning is what I mean)
it is customary for a certain sec
tion of the easily excitable Dusky
merican brotherhood t o start
boorrying that player as “All
American.” Playing with whites
on a football t -am does not neces
sarily mean that the colored pig
skin fondler is the best there is in
the nation at that position; it
merely means that at his particu
lar school he Btands heads and
shoulders above all other candi
dates.
Of the galaxy of sepia stars
now ringing in white college
welkins, only Simmons at this
time merits top honor considera
tion. The Iowa ace has collected
almost as mjany titl.s as has Joe
Louis. He has been called the
Black Bullet, the Hula Hipped
Hawkeye, the Sopia Spirte, the
Wizard of Oz, the Dancing Derv
ish, the Ebony Express—not to
mention several unprintable
things by opposing tacklers who
grabbed only great gobs of air as
the fleet back ghosted by. Fol
lowing a few moments in the seas
on’s opmer against Bradley Tech
when he lugged the ball only four
times for 10 yards, the dusky
star has lived up to the predic
tions made at the start of 1934
following which he was let down
by his teammates. A large, part
of the 20-year-old lad’s success
comes from the addition of 15
pounds for the current struggle,
raising h i s weight to 185 and
caking him harder to stop.
Take a look at his accomplish
ments prior to Saturday’s game
with Minnesota:
Against South Dakota—Ran 71
yards for a touchdown on a lat
eral pass play. Returned a punt
61 yards for another touchdown.
Against Colgate—Ran 63 yards
for touchdown after taking later
al. Plunged over for second and
winning touchdown. Gained 120
yards from scrimmage.
Against Ililnois—Ran 71 yards
for touchdown. Gained 192 yards
from scrimmage.
Agaiast Indiana—Ran 59 yards
on a rain soaked fi Id. Gained 119
yards from scrimjmage.
Altogether, prior to the Minne
sota game, Simmons carried the
ball from scrimmage 66 times for
a total gain of 464 yards or an av
erage of seven p.r try. Natur
ally that excludes punts—and he
is probably more dangerous
catching a kicked oval than at
any other time.
Iowa plays Purdue and North
western on successive Saturdays.
To date oven conservative sports
authorities call him the best run
ning back in the middle west.
Others say the entire nation. How,
I want to know, can Simmons be
kept off the nation’s first 11 this
year.

Surrender of Punnet
King Arranged for
Many Months Ago
Addis Abada, Nov. 16—ANP
— “Surrender" of Dodjas
match Ilaile Salassie Gugsa,
son-in-law of the Ethiopian
emperor, who went to the Ital
ians vjfth ^,500 warriors, in
stead of being a moral victory
as Mussolini would have it be
lieved, was purely the culmin
ation of a bargain arranged
with Rome several months ago,
it has just been revealed.
| Ras Gugsa, who has been
made a puppet emperor by II
Duce, had always been jealous
of Haile Salassie and his mar
riage to the Emperor’s daughter
did nothing to allay his envy.
When Italy's determination to
attack Ethiopia became clear,
Ras Gugsa negotiated with
Rome. His “surrender" in the
midst of the fighting was stage
managed, and the Ras played
his part to perfection. This
information was obtained by a
correspondent of a London
daily paper.
The Emperor, however, feels
a good deal of satisfaction at
the desertion of Ras Gugsa, for
it cleared up a very tense sit
I uation in the northern armies.
Ras Gugsa and Linn Mas Ras
I feioum are lifelong enemies.
Both are related to the Emper
or by marriage. Ras Sioum’s

Apologizes to Man
For Race Story
Birmingham!, Ala., Nov. 16.—
The reactionary Birmingham
News was forced to apolgize for
a two-inch streamer headline
reading “Negroes Slug Man, At
tack Girl” when a vigorous pro
test was sent the paper by Rev.
Stewart Meacham, white pastor
of the Dixon Memorial church
here.
Meacham attacked the sensa
tional headline of an incident
which occurred hundreds of miles
away. The charge of rape, he
pointed out, was supported only
by the testimony of a middle-aged
man and a girl who were found
alone in a secluded spot known for
“petting parties.” The two
claimed to have been “in conver
sation” when “robbed and as
saulted.”
“It is on this type of evidence
that you, by interference, slander
a fine and noble race of people,”
Rev. Meacham wrote. “On this
type of evidence you feel perfect
ly free to raise the cry of ‘Negro
rapist’ in our own troubld com
munity.
“The lynch mobs that you so
piously decry in your editorials do
not bear alone the guilt of m o b
murder. Every force and instru
cent that works toward the crea
tion of the lynch mind must share
in the guilt”
Commenting on Rev. Mea
cham’s letter, the News was
forced to admit the lynch incite
ment of the handling of the ar
ticle but put the blame for “the
unforunate occurrance” on "an er
ror in judgment on the part of
one of its news editors.”
assie Gugsa the Princess.
At the death of Ras Kuksa,
the little king of the Tigre pro'
vince, years back, his adopted
son, Taile Selassie Gugsa, was
promised the kingship but he
was done out of it by Ras
Sioum. Ras Gugsa remembers
this and his hate lingers.
As a general Ras Sioum, who
has remained loyal, is the more
important. He is more popular
and powerful. It is stated that
Italian bribes failed to corrupt
Ras Sioum, who chastised the
Italian omissaries and threw
them out. The Emperor knows
he will not lose Ras Sioum as
Ion gas Ras Gugsa is with
Mussolini.
