Gears controlled by twist grips on the handle bars of a new English bicycle give it 12 speeds. India planted nearly 30 per cent less land in jute this year than last and the crop is expected to show an even greater decline. Metal holders have been invented to fasten window shades on rollers without requiring the use of tacks. CURRENT EVENTS (>juiitiau£<l From Page One) A new wave of recation swept over Italy. The editorial offices of newspapers were burned down, citizens were beaten, wounded, killed. In Milan alone, three were kille dand a hundred wounded. In Trento and in the Milan prov ince, the newspapers and central offices of the Catholic organiza tions were seized in raids. General Bencivenga was beaten; the dep uties Turati, Treves, Lucci, etc., were forced to flee in order to evade death. We shall not give any further examples. W|e shall irecall only the “attempted assassination’’ in Milan ,April 12, 1928. This attempted assassination was planned an dcarried out by fascism, hand in hand with the fascist police, in order to justify, in the eyes of, the public, the shooting down of a number of anti-fascists who had been ar rested illegally ,and in order to get rid o fthem according to legal form. Gy this criminal action, fascism murdered 20 people, among them women and children ,and wound e dabout 50. Legalized Terror is Still Terror Blit, the toll of fascist crimes does not stsop there. It continues today, in silence, in the shadow and under cover of a pseudo-leg ality. The Special Court has handed down, in a period of nine years, more than 16,000 years in jail to approviinately 3,000 anti-fascist citizens. It has populated deserted is lands with deportees. It has caus ed the death, in jail, of political prisoners, simply because they were enemies of fascist rule. It causes its prisoners to be tortured in secret cells of the prisons. It has caused a number of political prisoners to be killed by the jail ers : Gastone Sozzi, Pugliesi, Villa, etc. I nthe first four months of this year, the Special Court handed] down sentences totalling more than twelve eentuefsiro,000Ul,bw than twelve centuries of confine ment, with individual sentences as high as 20 years; and this, to per sons who ha dbeen arrested two years previously, that is to say, before the famous “conditional’ ’ amnesty of September, 1934, and who, should, therefore, have come under the terms o fthis amnesty. Officials Of Pullman Brotherhood Attend Labor Convention I FOUGHT COLOR BAR Atlantic City, N. J., Oct. 11— (WP)—A Philip Randolph, Na tional President of the Brother hood of Sleeping Car Porters, and M. P. Webster, Chairman of the G-eneral Executive Board, were in Atlantic City to attend the Fifty fifth Convention of the A. F. of L. They remained East during the entire session of the Convention, and visited some of the Eastern j districts of the Brotherhood. Mr. Randolph continued his fight in the A. F .of L. Conven tion for the purpose of eliminat ing the color bar against Negro workers and securing equality of treatment for Negroes in the labor movement. Kansas Annual Conference By R. A. Adams (For the Literary Service Bureau) Topeka, Kansas.—The 60th session of the Kansas Annual Conference belongs to the past, having ad journed after being in session since it was convened by Bishop John A. Gregg, Wednesday morning. The session was held in historic St. John, one of the leading churches of the de nomination. Financial reports showed increase in spite of economic conditions. Delegates elected to the General Con ference are: R. S. Everett, H. W. Green and T. J. Burwell. The alter nates are L. R. Hayes, M. C. Knight, E. W. Smith and L. E. Mathis. The following lay delegates were elected at the Electorial College and certi fied to at the annual conference: | Fred Maxwell, Fred C. Helm, J. Louis Ransom and E. Percy Roberso. Lay alternates are Mrs. M. C. Knight, Mrs. [Jessie Cole, J. S. Par ry and Mrs. E. W. Smith. Resolutions were offered instruct ; ing the delegates to work for the , reassignment of Bishop Gregg to the 5th District; reaffirming the en dowment of Dr. J. Gomez for the bishopi-is; endorsing Dr. J. H. Clay borne for reelection as editor of Southern Christian Recorder and Dr. R. A. Adams for editor of the A. M. E.
