Tommy Douglas and his band
didn’t have much of a crowd to in
spire them at the Dreamland Monday
iught, but nevertheless, they really
played, and if you didn’t hear them,
you missed hearing a real good dance
band. Of course George Lee didn’t
show up but the band really didn’t
need him to ‘sell’ them so we
weren’t disappointed after all. ‘Little
Maxio Bailey’, the former director of
Gene Coy’s Orchestra, is now waving
his baton and dancing in his own in
imitable little way in front of
Tommy’s band. He did very nicely
in spite of the fact that he has been
with the band only a week. The
line-up of the band is as follows:
reeds, Tommy Douglas, Franz
Bruce and James Keith; brass,
James Ross, Sidney Miller, Edward
Johnson and Richmond Henderson;
rythm, Ben Curtis, Edward Phillips,
Robert Wilson and Effergee Ware.
Tho Synco Hi-Hatters of the J. B.

band in the person of Rodrick Wil

who replaced George Crumbley, Oh,

SAY
620 North Main St.
Excelsior Springs, Mo.
Sept. 23, 1935
To The Omaha Guide:
Having been ill for more than ten
years, and having tried numerous
doctors, I was finally advised to come
to this little health resort. I arrived
here on September 11, and was di
rected to one of the leading doctors
here, and through his careful advice
of the waters and treatments, I can
truthfully say on today, I am like a
new man.
I would like for others who are suf
fering to know of this wonderful
place. I can’t say too much for Ex
celsior Springs.
I am leaving here on tomorrow for
parts in Texas and Oklahoma and
hope to return soon to Omaha, a
well man!

Tennesseeans Plan
To Use Ballot
Against Judge
Knoxville, Tenn., Sept. 12—(By O.
Taylor for ANP)—Since protests
in letter form have failed to stop
Judge Robert P. Williams from using
tho words “nigger” and “darky” in
referring to Negroes who come be
fore hirp for trial, local Negro citi
zens are planning to put a stop to
the practice by defeating the jurist
at the forthcoming election, accord
ing to a report circulated here.
Judge Williams, who is known for
his fairness in dealing with Negroes,
according to the report has frequent
ly used the opprobrious terms in his
courtroom and the San Juan Civic
Club, composed of some of the most
influential citizens of color, has
written him several letters asking
that he cease to use the words “nig
ger” and “darky”. The judge has ig
nored these letters and has continued
to use the terms. Other candidates
for the bench have been questioned
as to their attitude on the question
and each has declared himself as op
posed to such terms and a movement
will be launched to defeat Judge Wil
liams, unless he stops using the
words to which the Negro citizens
have objected.
The San Juan Civic Club is head
ed by G. W< McDade, president, with
Dr. H. W. Green, chairman of the
executive committee and C. A. Cow
un, secretary.
The N. A. A. C. P. is going to
give away a General Electric refrige
rator at a large gift carnival, Octo
ber 14. Watch for further details.

W. B. Jiff Company
Appointed Louis
Representative
Pompton Lakes, N J, Sept. 28.
—Joe Louis, the new heavy
weight knockout sensation, an
nounced today tlie appointment
of W. B. Ziff Co, as his repre
sentatives in negotiating with
national advertisers seeking h i s
endorsement.
The sensational rise of Louis
in heavyweight ranks during the
past year has made him a nation
al hero. His fistic accomplish
ments have spread his name and
fame across the sport pages of
every newspaper in the land. He
is America's idol, famed for his
fighting and for his personal hab
its of clean Lving an sportsman
ship.
“Joe Louis,” states B. G.
Davis, an official of the W. B.
Ziff Co., “is an advertising na
tural. His ability to sell himself
to the great American sporting
public means that his name can
effectively sell any worthwhile
produca to the consuming public.
Louis and his managers have in
structed us to negotiate adver
tising contracts only for those
products which Louis or liis
family actually uses. Those
products which have been en
dorsed by Joe Louis will be ad
vertised extensively over the air
and through the newspapers, and
in most cases the leading Negro
newspapers will receive a sub
stantial share of all such, adver
tsing appropriations, ”
Louis has already lent his
name to such quality products as
Fletcher’s Castoria, Esso Gaso
line, and others. He has turned
down fabulous sums offered to
him by cigarette and liquor
manufacturers , simply because
he uses neither product. Sever
al patent remedy and razor
manufacturers are seeking his
endorsement as well as a promi
nent manufacturer, who wishes
to introduce a Joe Louis Cigar.
The W. B. Ziff Co. is a nation
ally known advertising and pub
lishing firm of Chicago and New
York, having placed millions of
dollars worth of advertising in
Negro newspapers. The W. B.
Ziff Co. has been for a great
many years, and is today the na
tional advertising representative
of The Omaha Guide.
