NADINOLA, Box N-16 Paris. Tenn. oNadtnola%B^r0az»i Proverbs and Parables By A. B. Mann (For the Literary Service Bureau) Finders Is Keepers If something is found and the owner cannot be discovered, of course, the finder has a greater right to the useof it than has any other person. But honesty would require that efforts be made to find the owner and restore the property. However, it is absolutely and palpa bly dishonest to know the owner of a lost article and still keep it. The nature or character of one’s atti tude and conduct in such a case should square with the Golden Rule. And, of course, each one would pre fer the return of his lost property. This should especially be impresed on children in whom should be instilled the principles of honesty. It is a se rious mistake then, to allow children to hear of such actions as picking up a lost article and running away with it, on the false assumption that “Finders is keepers." What Is Your Life? By R. A. Adams (For the Literary Service Bureau) What is your life? It cometh whence ? From God, you ansewT? Yes, and hence By His unaltering decree, To Him must final reck’ning be. What is your life? Say, do you choose In helpful enterprise to use The wonderous pow’rs which you possess Or spend your life in idleness? What is your life? Shall it be said When you are run be red with the dead, You lived as duty binds you should, In interest of human good? If thus for others you shall live, Best for your fellow-creatures give, Then have no fear of consequence Nor lack of ample recompense. Crimes of Mothers Against Their Children By R. A. Adams (For the Literary Service Bureau) A little while ago, a mother and her son were executed at the same time. They were convicted of murd er, the murder of the woman’s own brother, whom they killed in order to collect $2,000 of insurance on his life. At the time of the execution, another son was serving a life sentence for partcipation in the same murder. It was cruel enough and heartless enough for the woman to take the life of a human being, and that being her own brother. The worse phase of it was to lead her children into crime and cause them to suffer. But, this case is just one of the many in which mothers commit erim.es against thedr children. In this catalogue be long selecting vicious ben to be their fathers englecting their training dur ing the formative years; indulging them in indolence and encouraging thee in dishonesty; profiting by the dishonesty of boys and the immaral ity of girls; setting an evil exxample before them; and even these are far from being all of the ways by which mothers sin against their children. Many mothers, like the one in question, will repent when it is too late, and remorse will be added to other penalties they will pay for their terrible crimes against their children. Dear Father: I have read your dear letter. It is interesting as all of your letters are and while it was more busines than love, I know you love me, anyhow. I have been think ing of what you wrote about Easter. I never thought of it that way be fore, and I am wondering just why I do want new things for Easter. I suppose a big part of it is because the other girls wil have new things and every girl wants to look as well as the other girls. I don’t want these other girls to think that my father is too poor or too stingy to buy me new things like their fathers buy for them. Now father, since you are wise and good and know what is best I will do as you say, but I know I’ll be awful blue if I don’t have any new things for Easter. I thought people had the right to have whatever they had money to buy and didn’t have to think about other people and what they don’t have. Then, I wonder what you mean by the Easter spirit I don’t understand. Aunt Cornelia says $8.00 will buy the new things I want and she will tell you just what the money was spent for. Good-bye, Daddy. Your Loving Daughter, Alta Vesta. Des Moines Has Race Ideals Des Moines, la., July 31, ANF —This is truly the city of true and genuine brotherhood. The following item entitled “Procla mation of Brotherhood” was wirtten by Dr. S. Lane, white, pastor of the Congregational church, and the most popular pastor in the city. “We believe in the Father hood of God and the Brotherhood of man, and therefore we be lieve that people of all races be long to one family and are to be respected and treated as children of God and brothers of our own. “We believe in the fundament al principles of democracy which lie at the heart of our American life and which demand that equal rights and opportunities be given to all our fellowmen, regardless of race, creed or color. In the spirit of good will, we pledge ourselves not only to our belief, but t othe practise of it in our every day life- And we call upon all who believe in Brother hood and in Americanism to a like expression of their faith. “The practice of brotherhood means equality of economic op portunity to people of the minor ity races; ti means judging them not by race or color but by indi vidual merit; it means according to them equal rights in restaur ants, hotels, theaters, schools and all public places; it means not on ly charity but justice in every field of human relations; it means appreciation of and friendliness toward all our fellow citizens, of whatever race or creed or color they may be.’’ “Proclamation of Brother hood’' was adopted by the white Ministerial Alliance and the Des Moines Interracial Commission had it printed on small cards and distributed throughout the city. There appears to be no race discrimination here. Negroes are permitted in al public places. There are a number of interracial marriages here. The total popu lation is 142,000 5,0(0 of these are Negroes. There are only 17, 000 Negroes in the entire State of Iowa. From this State many great Negroes have come. Dr. George W. Carver, Tuskegee scientist, was reared and educated here, re ceiving his degree from Iowa State college in 1896. WEEKLY SHORT SERMON By Dr. A. G. Bearer By Dr. A. G. Bearer (For the Literary Service Bureau) Text: Let Him be anathema.—I Cor. 18:22. To anathematize means to curse, to cast out, to abandon to evil and destructiion. There is the mistaken idea that ecclesiactics have the au thority or right to pronounce a curse under certain conditions and for cer tain crimes. But for all such it would be well to consider the whin ing declaration of Balaam who de clared “I cannot curse whom God hath blessed.” One might ask, “Then, since a man cannot curse another and make it stick, not even a priest, then why consider it? Why give any possible attention to attempts to an&thema thize? In this case, as is true of all moral digresisons, the sin is in the spirit, the will. One may not be able to kill another, but the will to do so is murder. One may be prevented from stealing, but if he decided to do so and was hindered only by circum stance, he is a thief, nevertheless. So, in cursing or pronouncing a curse the sin is in the malevolence of spirit that wills misfortune to another. So, to anathematize is a sin whether the curse can be made to stick, or not. Other objectives will deal with the 1 interrelationship and cooperation of hospitals for whites and Negroes lo cated n the same community; the ap nontment of Negro physicians on the staffs of municipal hospitals, and the appointment of white physicians to the staffs of Negro hospitals.” Organized n 1923. The assocaton was organzed n 1923 Pt- Lous during the meeting of the National Medical Association. Since its organization, the National Hospital asociation has stood for the promo tion and development of better hos pitals along with advansed medical ca~» of the patients. Various philanthropic agencies and foundations have been interested to hr tent, that many surveys and statistical studies are now being made with emphasis on the urgent need for hospitalization of Negroes in the South. To give some idea as to the need for hospitals in the South, for Ne groes, there is eight-tenths of a bed for every 1,00 Negroes in South Caro lina. and one-fouth of a bed for an equal number in North Carolina. In add.tion there are 17,301 persons to each Negro physician in South Carolina For Negro nterns there are no rec onition available hospitals in the fol lowing states: Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas, Arkansas, iMessissppi, Flori da, West Virginia and South Caro lina. SAYS TULSA NEGROES BENEFITED POLITICALLY Tulsa, Okla., Aug. 1, (ANP) — Ne groes in Oklahome have accomplished more politically than Negroes in other states, Dr. B. A. Waynes said last week, because they have voted wise ly. Dr. Waynes is the superintendent of the Municipal Hospital for Negroes one of the finest of its kind for our people, which was built by the county and is maintained by it. He explained that in addition to giving Negroes a hospital, the coun ty has given them a colored county physician, public health nurse, county dentist, school doctor and school nurse, all colored. “The reason folk received these ap pointments,” Dr. Waynes explained, “is because they worked hard to elect the candidates, but refused to accept one cent for their work. Many of them, including myself, spent their own money to defray campaign ex penses. We were rewarded with these appointments, but had we ac cepted anything in advance for our services we would not have been en titled to these appointments." Dr. Waynes is a graduate of How ard university, Meharry and George R. Smith college in Missouri. Mothers—Let your boys be ■ Guide newsboys. Send them to the Omaha Guide Office, 2418-20 Grant Street.
