Stargell,1 farm hand, for arson in connec tion with the burning of the home of his former employer, Jefferson County white farmer, was answer ed by Stargell himself last week. He walked into the sheriff’s of fice and said he heard he was wanted for questioning. Stargell left the employe of Rich, the l^nd owner, on May 11. He had worked for about 3 months for nothing but food and old do.lies. After leaving Rich’s farm he went up the Warrior liver to search for work. Rich’s house caught fire early the following Tuesday. When he heard he was wanted for ques tioning Stargell travelled back to Birmingham under great difficul ties. He is being held "for investi gation.” Haiti Headed For Bloody Period, Mr. Pickens Predicts. New ’S ork, June 6.—If Presi dent Stenio Vincent of Haiti per sists in his attempts to succeed himself for another term, Haiti is on for a bloody period. This is the prediction of William Pickens, writing in ihe June Crisis under the title “Will Vincent Imitate Machado?’’ Mr. Pickens outlines the repressive measures adopted by the present regime and tells of the imprisonment of young po litical prisoners for no crimes, citing especially the case of Jac ques Roumain. Another leading article in the current Crisis is the one on Ne gro workers and trade unions by 'Frank R. Croswaith. Bronson Cutting was Negro’s Friend New York, June G.—The Board of Directors of the National As siciation for the Advancement of Colored People adopted the fol lowing expression of regret upon announcement of the death of Senator Bronson N. Cutting of New Mexico last week. “The Board of Directors of the National Association for the Ad vancement of Colored People ex presses its profound regret at the untimely death of the late Sena tor Bronson N. Cutting of New Mexico. Throughout his career he manifested an unsurpassed in terest in the well being of Negro Americans and could always be counted upon to lend his influ ence to the wisest and most ef fective means of combatting in justice based on race or color. “It is ordered that this expres sion of regret be spread upon the official mirpites of the Board of Directors and that copies be sent to Mrs. W. Bayard, Cutting, mother of Senator Cutting, and to the press.” Governor Hoffman to Speak at N. A. A. C. P. Oratory Contest Jersey City, N. J. No Evidence Whites Are Superior; Priest New York. June 6—There is no evidence that white people are superior to Negroes in intellig ence, but there is much evidence .o support the assertion that whites have been “wolfish’’ in their racial attitudes, according to I)r. John M. Cooper, writing, in the current issue of the Crisis on ‘ Religion and the Race Prob lem.” Dr. Cooper, professor of anthropology at the Catholic Dni versitv of America in Washing ton. D. C„ declares against pat ron Ding Die Negro and calls for i"«tiee aM a square deal in every ’■'base of American life, saying that is the on’v trulv Christian manner in which the problem can he handled. Make it 30,000 This Year Sweet charity; not to mention the desire to have a darned good time, next week will send Oma ha business and professional men into the donkey baseball lists in a series of games sponsored by the Omaha Junior Chamber of Commerce. Seven games will be conducted, evenings, from Mon day, June 10, through Sunday, June lti, at the Western League baseball park. A toiai oi If teams will play, two each night, on the following schedule: Monday night—Young Republic ans club vs. Young Democrats club.' Tuesday night—South Omaha Commission Men vs. Young Busi ness Men’s Association. Wednesday night—Home Owners Loan Corporation vs. Farm Credit Administration. Thursday night—Optimists club vs Omaha School Custodians. Saturday night—Boy Scout Ex ecutives vs. Cooperative club. Sunday night—Jewish Communi ty Center vs. City Hall. All games will begin at 8:30 o’clock. For those who did not se,e the donkey baseball inauguration in Omaha last summer, let it be ex plained that the game is played from the backs of train£<1 burros. All players except the pitcher and the catcher ride donkeys. The batter is on foot until he hits the hall; an ordinary sof ball is used, and then he must leap astride a waiting donkey and head for first base. That is, he heads for first if the donkey feels like it. The base riding donkeys mostly don’t feel like it. Generally, they are skit tish and of nasty temperament*. But, some riders do get to first base, and quite a few of them get all the way around to home, with a few spills en route. While the batter and his don key are arguing, the men in the field must pursue the hall on donkey-hack. When within one stride of the hall, they can leap off and retrive it. Then, the play er must get back on his donkey and throw the hall to first base, just as in, baseball. Last year. 20.000 guffawed at the antics of the donkeys and the Omaha business men. What Others Think To The Omaha Guide: I have just noticed that twenty eight new teahers have been add ed to the teaching staff of the pub lic school, but not one was color ed. I also noticed that during the winter months that 17 new ones were added, bringing the total up to forty-five new teachers in 1 he last six months. Now, I wonder if the so-called influential Ne groes feel that they can face the people next school board election uid advocate the election of any >f the present board and justify themselves when Negroes are pay ing taxes on $4,000,000.00 worth jf property and not even a Negro ianitor is employed in. the schools throughout the entire city. What a deplorable condition for free civilized people who Doast of playing golf and bridge tournaments and formal parties, rat no solution for our economic ills. Where now. are all the big Ne groes? Like the Secretary of the r. W. C. A., the Secretary of the LTrban League, the President of the Business Men’s League and he Ministerial Alliance? Why do they keep silent on such an im portant question? The N. A. A. u. P. seems to be willing to fight segregation in spots. Why not take lip this most vital economic problem? This is, without a doubt, the rankest discrimination I have witnessed in a life time. Phillip Morris, 2209 1-2 N. Nth, Ave.
