Sold in 25-cent packages. personality known to radio and club audiences throughout the country lost nothing in the filming, Fats work may be classed as superb. Bujangles was gloriously “tops” every moment of the time he was be fore the camera. LeGon, youthful dance artist, while not sensational, gave a creditable ac count of herself with Bill and shows promise of great work with added camera experience. Her classy step ping with Bill, in full dress, in the fiinale of the pic, is a sure-fire ap plause getter from any audience. The story concerns a venture in musical comedy production by Gene Raymond in order to win Ann Soth ern, who is featured in the cast. Phoney manipulations on the part of Miss Sothern’s father halt successful production and Raymond, assisted by Miss Sothern decided to put the show on alone. They hit upon a Negro angle to save the day. As in the story so in the picture, the Negroes literally run away with the production Fast-moving syncopation, with Bill Robinson starring in the group of colored characters and three little race kids. Fats piano antics, and LeGon’s introduction to film audiences make “Hooray for Love” well worth the evening out. Thurston Hall, Lionel Stander, Etienne Girardot, Marie Gambarelli and Georgia Caine are well cast in convincing roles. Hollywood critics genei-ally agreed that Fats and Bill and Jeni gave to “Hooray for Love” its one bit of real zest. Said the reporter: “Bill Robin son, ^dancing his way to more fame; Jeni LeGon, dancing and singing her way to fame; Fats Waller, giving the movie fans a chance to enjoy his per sonality piano playing . . . one could cry for plenty more.” Negroes to Get $1,500,000 Slum Clearance Project By Roy E. Dixon, for A. N. P. Dallas, Tex., June 7.—A move ment to clear Dallas of slum hous ing conditions in the immediate future, with the aid of Public Work Administration funds which it is said will reach a total of $3,000,000, was started at a meet ing of business and civic leaders and city officials at the Board of Education Building last Sat urday night. The meeting was called by Judge N. M. Chrest man, a former member of the Texas Relief Commission, who ac cepted leadership of the project at the request of the PWA of ficials. A committee to go over suggest ed sites, gather data and report was appointed by Mr. Chrestman. The following were made mem bers of the Committee, C. R. Moore, Alex Weisberg, Edward Tiche, Mr. Chrestman, and Miss Ada Miller, with Stuart Baily as Secretary. Tentative plans call for two projects, one for whites and the other for Negroes. Each project will consist of about 400 units compactly built on a single tract of land. The low cost of houses or apartments, it is said, will be sold with payments amortized for a period of forty-five years, with the Government absorbing 30 per cent of the cost. Payments for each unit will range between $12.00 and $20.00 per month, de pending upon the number of rooms in the unit. Leaders of the movement state that the project for Negroes will be given first consideration. Mr. Chrestman is reported to have said that two PWA engin eers have already made tentative investigation here and their re port is now in the hands of admi sistrative officials; but possible sites for the project have not as yet been considered. Rev. May nard H. Jackson, pastor of New Hope Baptist church and promi nent member of the Dallas Negro Interdenominational {Ministerial Alliance, and Dr. R. T. Hamilton, state chairman of the Texas Emergency Advisory Council for Negroes, on invitation of Mr. Chrestman, represented Negro citizens at the meeting held last Saturday night.. Special! MENS HATS CLEANED and BLOCKED EMERSON LAUNDRY and ZORIC DRY CLEANERS 2324 North 24th Street WEbster 1029 Judge and Jurors Appeal to Save Carraway’s Life — Jackson, Miss., June 7—(ANP)_ A cat has only nine lives, as the say ing runs, but Tom Carraway, sen tenced to die for an elleged criminal attack on a white woman, actually has ten and, maybe, eleven. Two weeks ago, all hope had been given up for Carraway, convicted and sentenced in 1931. A date for his ex ecution had been set nine times- Twice he was saved by intervention of the governor. Seven times, different state and federal courts came to his rescue. Then a tenth death date was set, last Friday, May 31. Carraway’s lawyers had exhausted their court pleas and death stared the doomed man in the face But proof that Carraway has ten lives was found in the fact that as the tenth death date approached, the judge who presided at the trial where Carraway was convicted and eleven of the jurors who heard the testimony, joined in a petition to the governor to commute Carraway’s death sentence to life imprisonment. The trial judge wrote the governor that new evidence had been discovered since the first trial which would lead him to give Carraway another trial if it were in his power to do so. Sources close to the governor stat ed that the chief executive was in a favorable frame of mind. Quash Indictment of White Jurors; Negroes Return True Bill Fairfax, Va., June 7, (ANP)—Mon day a week ago, an all-white jury in dicted Mrs- Louis Carpenter and her daughter, Mfery Carpenter, for arson, in connection with the burning of a dwelling for the alleged purpose of de frauding the insurers. When the two women were brought to trial, their counsel attacked the in dictments because no Negroes were among the jurors who returned the true bills. The Supreme court decis ion in the Scottsboro case was cited. | As a consequence, the court dis missed the indictments and convened a special grand jury composed entirely of Negroes and on Friday it returned indictments against both women. It marked the first time in 52 years since an all-Negro jury had served in Fairfax county. It was stipulated, that he should work a year at hard labor before exe cution. However, when the execu tion date arrived, the then gov ernor neglected to sign the death warrant and, later, the legislature abolished capital punishment. Quinn continued to work through the years at hard labor and final ly won a place in the prison band. Recently, the legislature re-estab lished the death penalty, but it will not effect Quinn because the new law is not retroactive. Traveling Choir Sings for Prisoners Boston, Mass.,June 5.
