New York, Jan. 18.—The leading

ton, La., urging him to “immediate
ly send to Congress a special and
unequivocal message demanding im
mediate passage of the Costigan
Wagner Bill” which provides for fed
eral action to end the crime of lynch
ing. The teegram with 150 signa
tures was sent by the Writers’
League Against Lynching, of which
W. E. Woodward is chairman, and
Suzanne LaFollette is secretary. It
reads:
“We the undersigned writers
editors and publishers of the United
States have repeatedly appealed to
you to urge upon Congress the need
of federal legislation against lynch
ing. Yesterday Jerome W.lson was |
lynched in a Louisiana jail without1
interference Ifrorri authorities after I
the Louisiana supreme court had
granted him a new trial. Every
lynching which takes place reflects
discredit upon the federal government
because of its failure to exercise its
tremendous influence in behalf of jus
tice and humanity. Once again there- '
foie, we strongly urge that you im-!
mediately send to congress a special
and unequivocal message demanding
immedate passage of the Costigan- ’
Wagner Bill.”
Protest to Huey Long and Gov. Allen

telegrams at the same tim,e to Senator j
Huey Long and to Governor 0. K. Al

their boasted power to punish the
lynchers of Jerome Wilson and to pre
vent further lynching3 in their State
The telegrams:
“The Walters’ League Against
Lynching numbering in its mem
bership writers, editors, and
publishers both southern and north
ern calls upon you as Governor of
Louisiana to make good the oft re
peated boast of yourself and Senator i
Huey Long that Louisiana can pre
vent ljmchlngs and punish lynchers by
bringing to justice the criminals who
lynched Jerome Wilson yesterday at
Franklinton.”
“You have repeatedly asserted that
you are the dictator of Louisiana and
that your will is law. The Writers’
League against Lynching representing
writers, editors and publishers, south
ern as well as northern, calls upon
you to use your power immediately to
punish to full extent of law lynchers
of Jerome Wilson at Franklington.”

FLOWER SHOW TO
BE HELD HERE AT
AK-SAR-BEN
Ford Hovey, president of the Occi
dental Building and Loan Ass’n, and a
prominent civic leader recently chos
en to head the advance ticket sales
committee for the National Flower
and Garden Show to be held at Ak
Sar-Ben coliseum March 30 to April
7th, has urged Omahans desirous of
attending the show to procure tickets
early.
“Advance tickets will be sold for
40 cents. We were able to procure
only 50,000 of these tickets. I do not
think this number will be enough and
therefore I urge everyone who wishes
to see the Flower Show to get their
tickets as soon as they are placed on
sale February 1”, Mr. Hovey said.
Tickets will be placed on sale at
convenient points in Omaha, Council
Bluffs, Western Iowa and Eastern Ne
braska.
In a statement expressing apprecia
tickets as soon as they are placed on
mittee of 15 handling advance ticket
sales, Mr. Hovey said:
“I believe that Omaha, which has
been the host of so many great civic
projects, will welcome the National
Flower Show with no less enthusiasm
than it vouch-safed them. Every
public-minded citizen should see this
show. It is a national show, a great
thing for Omaha.”
Mr. Hovey pointed out that when
advance tickets have run out admis
sion prices will be raised to sixty-five
cents for the duration of the show.

SAYS NAZIS JUSTIFY JEW-BAIT
ING BY POINTING TO U S.
LYNCHINGS
New York, Jan. 18.—In a letter to
President Roosevelt scoring lynching
and urging him to use his influence to
end it, a noted American woman liv
ing in Geneva, Switzerland, writes:
“The ‘Nazi’ justifies his persecution
of Jews by reference to the American
attitude to Negroes; and the abuses
in concentration camps and prisons,
which shame mankind, are interrelat
ed with excesses in other countries”.
The writer is Miss Emily G. Balch,
International Secretary of the Wo
men’s International League for Peace
and Freedom* and a copy of her let
ter to the President has been sent to
the National Association for the Ad
vancement of Colored People.
“The discredit abroad”, she says,
“brought upon the country by such
occurences must be, and doubtless is,
present to the American mind, even
if only imperfectly realized as to its
extent and intensity. But it is not on
this ground that we appeal to you,
Mr. President, to use your personal
influence to ensure that every pos'ible
means to put an end to lynching is
employed to the utmost . . . We do,1
however, want to point out that,
apart even from the question of hu
man suffering, every example of law
lessness and violence in one country
reacts in every other and intensifies
existing tendencies to resort to in
olerance, cruelty and tyranny.”
