The singing of the children at the
eariy Mass, on last Sunday, was in
deed a beautiful contribution to that
service. Sister Mary Daniels is con
ducting this work with the children,
assisted by Mrs. Marie James.
The senior choir feels that much of
the praise that is being given them
for their excellent renditions of the
High Masses on Sundays, is due to
the clear sweet soprano voice of Mrs.
Owens, who is the leading soloist of
the choir. Mr- and Mrs. Owens have
lately become active workers in the
church, and we highly apprec ‘ate
them.
The P. T- A. will hold its first

THE UNWRITTEN LAW
By R. A- Adams
(For The Literary Service Bureau)
To begin with, “there ain’t no sich.
anermul,” as Senator Sorghum would
say- This thing so-called is the crys
talized conclusion that a man has a
right to kill another, “in defense of
his home;” and a mob has the right
to commit murder when a woman has
been “assaulted,” or when an unusual
ly heinous crime has been committed
First of all, a man cannot associate
with a woman without her consent.
Again, both are of age and both are
responsible. Finally, there are a few
men. if any, who have not at some
time associated with some other wo-!
man and some other man’s wife, and
association with any other woman is
breaking marriage vows. For a man
to associate with another man’s wife
is as bad as another man’s deed in as
sociating with his wife. No man
would concede that his wife had the
right to kill him for his escapades
with other women, nor would he deem
himself deserving death for intima
cies with other men’s wives- Under
such circumstances there is no justi
fication in killing for the same
i crime of which the killer himself is
1 guilty.
As to criminal assault, there are
| few cases of such- It is the consensus
of opinions that the number of such
cases where women and men have
been intimate, the men were accused
through fear, jealousy, revenge or to
save from what would be considered
worse disgrace. As to m'-'b violence
for any crime whatever, let it be re
membered that we have laws, judges,
courts and judicial procedure which
make personal revenge inexcusable

Lesson for February 4
PUTTING GOD S KINGDOM FIRST
} ______
! LESS. N TEXT—Matthew 6:1-34. *
I GOLDEN TECT-Seek ye first th«
, kingdom of God ar.d his righ'terofsncss
and all these things shall be added un
to you. Matthew 6:33.
PRIMARY TOPIC-Jesus Tells of,
I God's Care.
I JfNK .R TOPIC—In Ses.rrh of R . hes.
intermediate and senior top
ic—Serving One Master Only.
! YCK'NO PEOPLE AND A ' ALT TOP
IC—Putting First Things First.
Having set forth in the previous
chapter the standards of the kingdom,
Christ the king now exhibits the nn- '
deriving principles which control the
' subjects of tiie kingdom.
I. As to Giving (vv.1-4).
lining alms before men is not con
demned as that would contradict
Matthew 5:16, but the doing of them
before men to be seen of them. To
seek publicity in doing our alms is to
miss the reward of the heavenly Fa-;
thcr.
II. As to Praying (vv. 5-15).
i The spirit of Self-advertisement fre
quently (li-qilays itself even in the holy
ex rcise of prayer. In order to tor
re this evil tendency he sets forth
1. False prayer (vv. 3, 7). This con
sists in '■
a. Praying to he seen and heard of
men (v. 5). Many of the prayers ut
tered in public are false, for the thing
| uppermost in the mind of the one pray
ing is what the people think rather
than what God thinks. '
b. Using vain repetitions (v. 7).[
This does not mean that we should}
ask but once for a given thing. We
have examples of both Christ and Paul
praying three times t'or the same thing
(Matt. 26: 39-46; II Cor. 12:7, 8). Ir,
means rather the using of meaningless
repetitions,
2. True prayer (v. 6). Since real
prayer is a transaction of the soul
with God, there should be a real de
sire for fellowship with him which
moves one to meet him in the secret
; place.
3. The model prayer (vv. 9-15).
This involves
a. Right relationship—“Our Fa
ther” (v. 9). Before one can pray so
as to be heard he must, through the
• regeuerating work of the Holy Spirit,
( become a child of God.
b. The right attitude—“Hallowed
be thy name” (vv. 9, 10). While God
is our heavenly Father he is more than
j that. He is the Almighty. We should!
go before him then with reverent
adoration.
c. A right spirit—“Give us this day,
our daily bread,” “Forgive us our
sins,” “Lead us not into temptation”
(vv. 11-13). Those who would pray
effectively must have such faith as
I would trust him for daily bread, and
' such love as would forgive those sin-1
ning against them, and such hatred
! of evil as to desire not to be led into i}
temptation.
III. As to Fasting (w. 16-18).
The true reason for fasting is to be
found In the opportunity it gives fo*
a clear vision of God.
IV. As to Earthly Riches (vv. 19-24).
The Lord knew the temptations
which would befall his children In
ther pilgrimage and the anxiety to
which they would lead; therefore he
set forth the proper attitude toward
earthly possessions.
' 1. The nature of earthly riches
(tv. 19-21).
a. They are uncertain (vv. 19, 20) .■
Earthly treasures corrode, and may be
taken from us.
b. They are seductive (v. 21). Christ
called riches deceitful (Matt. 13:22).
It is not wrong to possess earthly
treasures, bnt when earthly treasures'
possess us they become a snare un
to us. i
2. The effect of earthly riches (vv.
22-24).
a. They blunt the moral and spirits
nal perceptions (vv. 22,23). Thosf
who become enamored with the thing!
.of the world soon become irresponsiv f
to spiritual things.
b. They render service null and
void (v. 24). As soon as ore s heart
Is stolen by riches, he is unfitted for
spiritual service.
V. As to Faith in the Heavenly
Father (vv. 23-34). j
! L Be not anx'ous about food and
clothmg (vv. 23-32). To oe filled with
anxiety concerning food and clothing
a. Shows distrust of God (v. 30).
b. It is useless (v. 31). Anxiety
brings us absolutely nothing.
c. It Is heathenish (v. 32). Those
who know Gcd as the loving Father
will be free from anxious care.
2. Be sincerely anxious to seek the
kingdom of God and serve bin (vv.
13, 34). This means that world af
fairs should be subordinated to spir
I tual affairs. I
! ir.cn there. How could the father
j expect either child to have any de
| gree of modesty?
Modesty is the protecting wail
around the citadel of virtue, and any
i thing which makes breeches in this
wall will endanger the citadel- It
seems strange that parents who
were themselves reared in the con
servative way should be so careless
I in such things. “This is the age of
frankness and reality” they tell you.
But toe much frankness of that kind
is destructive. Better go back to
modesty and its kindred virtues.
WAIT
By R. A. Adams
(For The Literary Service Bureau)
V> hen you have done vour part
Despite your anxious heart,
Tho recompense be late.
In hope and patience, wait.
If zealously you’ve wrought,
Or valiantly have fought
Failure to obviate.
For consequences, wait
If honestly is due
More than is granted you,
Rail not at biased fate.
But bide your time—just wait!
•
So, you will find it best.
Matters not what the test,
Purpose to consummate,
: Just patiently to w-ait!
I AM'S OF JESUS
By Dr. A. G. Bearer
(For The Literary Service Bureau)
I am the true vine—John 15:1.
The chief lessons taught by this
expression are the delicate and ten
der relationship between Jesus and
His followers, *and the utter depen
dence of the branches upon the vine
According to Jesus, life depends cn
I connection with the vine The pur
j pose of correction or chastisement is
to increase fruitfulness. This abiding
j two-fold, the believer abides in
Christ and Christ abides in the be
liever. When the purging fails to
promote fruitfulness the branch is
cut off. allowed to dry, then is cast
into the fire and burned.
The summary might be Christ the
true vine is the source of all spirit
ual life- From Him the believer
draws spiritual sustenance, his meas
ure of peace and joy. It is his privi
lege to abide in the vine and have
life, or let the connection be severed
and die. And the success of Chris
tian fruitfulness or achievement
^ hangs ever on his connection with the
: vine- This is set forth emphatically
by Jesus in the expression “.A» the
branch cannot bear fruit of itself, ex
cept it abide in the vine, no more
can ye. except ye abide in me-”
