THE WORLD'S COAL DEPOSITS.
Estimates of Their Size by a Leading
German Authority
' A German periodical, "Stahl , und
Eisen" ("Steel and Iron"), has been
collecting figures indicating the quan
tity of coal still left in the world. Its
figures favor Germany perhaps un
dulyand some of them must be to
a certain extent guesswork. Still, the
prominence of the paper in question
lends to its opinions a value that
should not be underrated.
"Stahl and Eisen' puts Germany's
own deposits at 280,000,000,000 tons,
which, with the present consumption,
will suffice for a couple of thousand
years, and, making allowance for an
increasing demand, in any case should
last till the year 3000. Added to this,
the paper states that there is some
reason to believe that the coal deposits
of Germany have been underestimated,
and that they may be put at as much
as 415 millards of tons. The. other
European powers, in the opinion of the
paper, are much less favorably sit
uated. Thus the coal deposits Qf Great
Britain and Ireland amount to only
about half of those of Germany, or
about 193,000,000,000 tons, and, as the
annual consumption is twice as big as
that of Germany, England may have

Have Smutless Grain
, Of all the farmers' foes smut Is the easiest one to conquer in
fact, no fanner need lose a dollar from smutty grain. If any facts in
regard to grain have been conclusively proved, they are that:
Smut is the product of a germ that is planted with the seed.
That seeds upon which the smut germs have been destroyed will
not grow a smutty crop.
That wheat, corn, oats or barley treated with a solution of Formal
dehyde will be freed from every trace of the smut germ.
, Two points, however, must be observed: the Formaldehyde must
be of a full-strength, commercially pure grade, and all the grain must
come in contact with the solution. In the case of our Formaldehyde
(the exact grade used at the Experiment Station), one pound added to
forty-five gallons of water will be sufficient for from seventy-five to
eighty bushels of wheat or corn or forty to sixty bushels of oats or
barley. It costs 33 cents a pound. Is it worth ONE-HALF CENT A
BUSHEL to free your seed from smut? Rather, you can afford to take
chances when you can insure a smut free crop for such an insignificant
sum. ;' ' '' ' -:

As regards the other countries the
coal deposits of Belgium are estimated
to contain 23 millards of tons, those of
f ranee 19 millards, those of Austria
17 millards, and those of Russia about
40 millards tons. The whole makes an
aggregate for Europe of about 700
millards of tons of coal. t The coal de
posits of North America are estimated
to contain nearly as much as those of
Europe, or 681 millards tons, but even
this gigantic figure is completely
dwarfed by Asia's wealth of coal, as
to which it Is at present impossible
to make an even approximate esti
mate. China, more especially, seems
to possess inexhaustible supplies, and
a German scientist has put the coal
deposits of the province of Shan-Si,
China, alone, at 1,200,000,000,000 tons.
Siberia and the island of Saghalien
also contain vast coal deposits, and
altogether the paper does not see any
cause of alarm as to a universal coal
famine. , v
