In connection with the Kherson
oaU should he mentioned the sixty
dav oats, a variety imported from Rus
sia by the Pulled Stales department
of agriculture. This oats is almost
identical with the Kherson In appear
ance and habits of growth Any de
wrlpilon of the Kherson oats will also
suffice for the sixty day.
The planl Is a vigorous, but not a
rank grower. The straw Is short, and
while this Is an advantage in decreas
ing the tendency to lodge, It results
in a light yield of straw per acre. The
leaves are very broad and expose a
large surface. The grain ripens from
one to two weeks earlier than most
varieties. The berries are light yellow
in color, small but numerous, and have
t thin hull. They usually weigh well
per bushel, and In this respect as well
as in yield per arre these varieties
have led all others in this station.
The Kherson oats Is peculiarly suit
ed to central and western Nebraska
on account of Its ability to grow with
little moisture and its bablt of early
ripening. Although It usually yields
well In eastern Nebraska, there are
other varieties that compare favor
ably with It, at least In the river coun
ties, Reports received from 171 par
ties in the mate who have tested this
variety during the years 1901 to 1805
inclusive Indicate that It ripens earl
ier, yields better, and weighs heavier
In a series of years thany any other
variety In central and western Nebras
ka, with the possible exception of the
Texas Red. The Kherson oats has
ueadily outyielded the Texas Red on
the station farm.
The following tests on the station
farm serve to show how this oats
compares with some other well-known
varieties. They also show that under
very favorable climatic conditions
like those of 1905 the Kherson oats
aid not have as great an advantage
over other varieties as It did In the
more unfavorable years. It Is probab
ly the sixty day oats would have yield
ed as well as the Kherson If It had
wen raised here longer:
