The election of this year has produced a great body of independent
voters that will hold the balance of power in future elections. lhese
voters are not necessarily men without a party. They may believe
in republican, democratic or populist principles but they have clo
uded that the old maxim, "principles are more important than the
man," is deceptive, and that principles without men of principle back
of them, are useless. nafin
The independents of 1905 differ from the independents of 1880
and 1890 in that they have cut their eye teeth. In those days the
independents suspected, and when they expressed their suspicions,
they were called fanatics and anarchists; now they know, and wily
politicians can no longer frighten the conservative members of -the
body politic by the familiar cries of canting accusation. 1 olitical

leaders will be forced to deal more honestly with the people.
Political leaders who are constitutionally unable to deal honestly with
anybody, will not endure long as leaders in the new era of the
"square deal."
To the independents of 1905 The Independent extends a hearty
welcome, whether they be men of party or men without a party. If
they be men of party they cannot fail to do their parties and the
people good. If they be men without a party they will also bo of
much service to the people in keeping the parties in clean hands.
