Secretary Shaw, of the treasury department, recently sent-to Indianapolis J Knox Taylor, supervis ing architect of the government, who reported that the base designed for the statue was so large that it would be inharmonious in such close proxi mity to the building, which is to cost $1,500,000. Secretary Shaw inclines to his view, but Vice President Fair banks has already signed the report of the statue commission approving the large base.
