CHANDLER TRIPS UP CULLOM
Latter Confesses Agreement Existed
to Shelve the Rate Bill
The Washington correspondent of
the Baltimore Sun repeats a conver
sation in which that irrespressible
joker, W. 13. Chandler, the former sen
ator from New Hampshire provoked
Senator Cullom into a dangerous ad
mission concerning the farcical na
ture of the railroad "investigation"
of the senate committee.
"I cannot comprehend the course
of Senator Aldrich," Mr. Chandler is
quoted as saying, In a conversation on
the railroad problem with the presi
dent and Senators Elkins and Cul
lom at the White House. "His desert
ing his post and going to Europe at a
critical moment was most amazing.
The railroad interests were likely to
suffer in his absence. The rate bill
might have been passed before the
close of the session. Yet he packed
off as though he had no concern.
Nothing could be more unlike Aid
rich. The interstate commerce com
mittee of all jthe senate committees
is the one that goes right down to the
merits of a question, and the com
mittee cannot .be induced to deviate
or delay. Knowing this as ,well as
anybody, Aldrich deserted his post.
Something has "gone wrong with
him."
Cullom listened to this with a rising
spirit of combativeness and broke in
at the last word with aij earnest and
perfectly serious defense of Aldrich.
"You are mistaken, Chandler," he
said. "Aldrich did not run away leav
ing things in the air. I know all about
it. He would not leave until he had
the promise of a majority of the com
mittee that nothing should be done
with the rate bill."
A queer look passed between
Chandler and the president. "Oh, of
course, if you speak from personal
knowledge" Chander said, "that puts
the matter in a different light."
Then the conversation continued on
the subject of railroad rates as if no
one had been tripped.
SYCAMORE MINERAL SPRINGS
Is a splendid place to spend your
vacation. The wonderful mineral
waters of the various springs are
good for the tired and over worked
people," as well as the sick and af
flicted. -
The New Hotel is complete and
will accommodate seventy-five people.
Has commodious rooms well ventilat
ed, with bath rooms and toilet on
every floor. "
Why pay out so much to go to a
far away resort while there is one
so near, and the waters so much" bet
ter than any that can be found else
where. This fact is established by
the amount of water that Mr. Kauff-
man is shipping out daily. The read
ers of The Independent should re
member this when thinking of taking
a trip for their health, or otherwise
! The springs are located near Salem,
Neb., Sabetha and Morrill, Kansas.
Good, livery service from those points,
Any one sending this add with their
address to Mr. E. V. Kauffman, Sa
betha, Kansas, will receive circular
and picture of the new ' hot el.
