Zfte .HobraoXio. IndopcndcnS MAT 25, 19C5 PLEASED WITH THE INDEPENDENT 0 4 Welcomes Mr. Berge to the Fray. Instead of starting a new paper at Lincoln, Mr. Berge has bought The Nebraska Independent, , which is the leading populist paper in the United States. He will be the editor-in-chief and will . carry on a campaign against the ., pass evil and the great evil of railroad ' and corporate domi-. nation In public affairs. He says that Governor LaFollette of Wisconsin, "Governor Folk- of Mis souri, Governor Deneen of Illinois and Governor Cummings of Iowa will contribute to the .paper. We are glad to welcome Mr. Berge into the ranks or the fraternity. There can be no question of his devotion to the special principles he will stand for. He believes that the people ought to take back and exercise the power of government that has been sedulously,-. surreptitiously taken from them by the great corporations and he may be counted upon to do all iri his power to arouse the people, regardless of party, to stamp out the great evils of corporate ; misrule which all acknowledge to exist. We welcome Mr. Berge to, not a feast, but a fight nay, to the fight, the great battle for industrial and political lib erty from corporate domination, which must be fought out. New Era Standard, of Kearney. Keeps Him Guessing The Independent was formerly published at Lincoln for many years by. the venerable T. H. Tibbies who stood up for populism and reform in a manner that would entitle his statute to be placed among the colonnades of ihe Roman forum. Weary of the struggle he has lurned ? is paper over to George W. Berge, ex-candidate fo: the office, of governor on the fusion ticket against Hon. J. H. Mickey, the republican candidate. Mr. Berge.v while new in the editorial harness, shows much snap and ginger, in the sample copy ofjThe Independent sent us.- There also appear articles by such able men as his law partner, Mr. Morning, and Uncle Jake Wolf. The intent of the paper so far as we can discern is to uphold the right and denounce the wrong whenever it appears, but when election time rolls around whether it will fuse with the democrats or re publicans or go it alone we are not clear. It is probably entirely too early to discuss such a ser ious subject Wood River Interests.. Berge and The Independent Mr. George W. Berge, the late fusion candi date .for governor, has become proprietor and editor of The Independent. We welcome Mr. Berge into the field of journalism. There is much need of men of his stamp in the business of moulding public opinion. We believe Mr. Berge will do his best to mould it in right lines and we are satisfied he has the ability and energy to succeed. The Independent has been an able, fearless and aggressive advocate of advanced political thought and Mr. Berge has a heavy task on his hands to sustain its good reputation, ( but "we have no doubt he will he equal to it. He is pursuing the right course in becoming both the owner and editor of the paper. There will be no strings to him and he will be free, to voice his own sentiments, which, as far as we have observed, are true and noble sentiments. The first number of. the paper under his direction has been received and Is a fine edition. It bristles with good forcible editorial matter and the general make up of the paper is attractive. York Dem ocrat. v " . Will Have Support of Thousands The Nebraska Independent came out last week under the care and direction of Mr. Berge. He Is a man of acknowledged ability, of undoubted integrity, and strong personality. In addition to this he will have the cordial support of thou sands in this state and elsewhere. This ordi narily ,w,ould Insure success. From one point of view it" Is sure of success. It will be a fearless and honest exponent of reform principles. It will take a radical stand on all Important issues. It will be both a pleasure and a profit to read The Independent, knowing that it bean the stamp of. sincerity and truthfulness. -We hope many readers of the Courier will see it to their ad vantage to subscribe for this excellent paper. It will be both an individual benefit and a benefit to the cause of reform. Minden Courier. Recalls Pertinent Facts , The article in The Nebraska Independent from which we make a few extracts in another column, recalls the fact that during the last campaign, or rather at its outset, the order went out from the men who "financed" the republican side: "Pay especial attention to the selection of judges." For aught we know, the same orders were given to democratic managers; and indeed, in view of the pre-arranged candidacy of Parker, one is justified in presuming that to be the fact. Be that as it may, it is obvious, now, that the men behind the scenes who plan the campaigns that politicians carry out are fully awake to the necessity of having the judiciary, from federal courts down, of the sort that will block legisla tion unfavorable to the maintenance of corpora tion rule. That those schemers have chosen the congressional delegation to aid them in Nebraska is simply a sign that they hope to carry their point by that means in that particular case. In other states circumstances may dictate the feasi bility of other methods; but of one thing the peo ple may be assured: The reliance of the trusts is in a corruptible , judiciary. The American Standard, Frankfort, Ind. PAG2 5f grabbers left to stay at home or the people must expect to suffer the consequences. The only remedy is in the government ownership of all public utilities and it does not take a wise man to see that this remedy is not so very far off. When the people once awake to a fact they will adopt it in spite of any political party. Holt County Independent. , - . Likes the Matter and Style. . The Nebraska Independent came to our desk last week under the management of the new editor, George W. Berge. It retains the same form and makeup as under the former management, but the contents are as much better and different from the old regime as there is difference be twen day and night We will welcome its weekly visits and trust that the new management may have the best of success in their new venture. Greeley Leader-Independent Wants Constancy In the Faith George W. Berge, who made such a Splendid race for governor of Nebraska last fall, recently purchased The Independent at Lincoln, Neb., one of the populist papers of national promi nence and circulation. Mr. Berge is a strong populist and one of the best public speakers in the state and will no doubt keep The Independent up to its high class work for the people of Ne-' braska in the last fifteen years. Here's 'opin' at least that The Independent never wavers in the cause of progression which it has so long and ' faithfully labored. The Messenger, Smith Center, Kansas. ' - Will Be a Long and Hard Fight The Nebraska Independent is making a good fight against the pass grabber and all good citi zens will wish the editor final success. . . It will be a long fight and a hard one, but the pass grabber 'must finally go out of business in an official way. It is almost impossible to remedy this evil under our present system of doing busi-, ness. The pass holders usually get elected to all conventions and consequently get nominated for all offices. Our law makers are made up of those who accept the pass and as long as the republican party stays in power it vill be the same. , The . pass must be killed and the pass Liked the First Number The Independent, with the name of George W. Berge as the editor, came to us last week. The paper is a good one, chuck-full of first-class reading matter. An article from; Ex-Governor Larrabee of Iowa, on railroad legislation, and other meaty productions from the pens of noted writers, added to the strong editorials from the gifted editor, make the first number r a most in teresting one.
