WOMAN'S WAIST.
The Oldy Story in a New Form
(Brooklyn Eagle.) "
We all know that there is no tight
lacing any more. Any woman will
say so. Every woman wears. a cor
set, but Lor'! it is so loose that you
could put , ten pounds of candy inside
and she would still rattle in it. The
death of a woman in St. Louis from
alleged tight lacing is one of those
stories invented by mere men to castj
up to their wives when the men want'
an excuse for being ill natured on
the morning after the club dinner.
Tight lacing used to be classed with
rum and tobacco as a scourge to the
human race, and the best thing to
do with it under such circumstances
was to eliminate it from consideration
by the men. A No. 45 corset on a
No. 46 woman used to produce effects
that were painful not merely to tfie
wearer, but to the beholder. For ex
ample, she r acquired a red nose, she
wheezed and waddled, she assumed a
dumb-bell shape and attitude that met
the demands of the fashion journals,
but not of esthetics, and she adver
tised her disrobing to all the house
by a loud pop, when the corset strings
were cut, . Therefore, there is no more
tight lacing. The alleged victim in
St. Louis died from the effects of St.
Louis atmosphere, diet and politics.
. At the same time we take this occa
sion ,to reprehend the pictures that
certain corset makers are applying to
our house fronts, our subways, our
fences, our public libraries, our roof
tops and other points of advertising
vantage, because they tend to create
the impression that lacing is still per
missible. These pictures represent a
woman of heavenly grace, of the usual
width except at the waist, which she
has compressed until it becomes a
mere handle, like that of a goblet.
Now, a person who is two feet across
the shoulders ought not to have a

through. No room is left for the
