At feu tl(vawi personal letters, of which no mailing record was kept, the following state ment shows the work done from De cember 5, 1903, to February 29, 1904: Dec. 5: original 9G0 test letters; Dec. 19, lot A, 610; Dec. 24, lot B...384; Jan. 1 Int C.t 748; Jan. 8. lot D, 600: Jan. 16, lot E, 1,134; Feb.'l7-26, lot F, 1,!74. Total, 6,010. Although the enrollment seems to indicate about one to every tour let ters sent out, the average is not so good, because a good many enroll ments came as the result of the work done 'by The Independent, Missouri World, Cleburne (Tex.) Watchman, Southern Mercury, and Vineland ' (N. J.) Independent, resulting in personal correspondence which does not appear in the mailing record. There are now outstanding fully 5,000 unanswered invitations to enroll, mailed as above set out. Contributions to aid in the work average less than 25 cents to each enrolled person. There were, however, but 700 contributions all told and, as a number gave sums on a number of occasions, the total number of contributors Is about 650, All mail since March 15 is being sent sealed. The returns from lot F having thus far failed to pay the $15.74 postage expended, I have lim ited my . outgoing mail to 100 letters a day, until such time as the returns will permit an increase. I expect to place an order in a few days for 5,000 lapel buttons for the Vanguard and Old Guard and will mail one to each enrolled member. Ask your readers to answer promptly and the work can be pushed very rapidly from now on. CHARLES Q. DE FRANCE.
