14 THE NEBRASKA INDEPENDENT JANUARY 1, 1903. TrustsThe Cause and Cure FREE TRADE PUBLIC OWNER SHIP. Editor Independent: As you request the views of some of your readers, I proceed to give mine. In the first place I think as many others that if the Sherman anti-trust law was put in force, it would help to curb the trusts; then take off the tariff on goods made by the trusts, as it is the mother of the trusts. The high tariff has en abled them to accumulate a vast amount of wealth and by combining they are enabled to issue double tne amount in watered stock and to pay large dividends to the stockholders. I am in favor of free trade; wipe out the tariff and have an income tax. I think then it would let in competi tion. I think it would do more than anything else and with government ownership of all utilities would bring them to time. I think the Bryan democrats and populists fusion doc trine is pure Jeffersonian democracy. As to discrimination in freight, that is the fruit of trusts and other monop olies, and government ownership of railroads would wipe that out I don't believe if we had had an in come tax that we would have had war with the Filipinos, but as the consum ers have to pay for it through a high tariff tax on everything we consume, the wealthy "escape the expenditures and extravagance of a profligate na tion brought on by the republican par ty. S. T. BROMWELL. Fayetteville, Ark. OUR FINANCIAL SYSTEM. Editor Independent: In answer to your request for your readers to write and send in their opinions as to the cause and cure of tnists, I thought I would dot down a few thoughts in regard to them. First of all, the cause Is, our present financial system, which in my opinion was enacted on pur pose to build up a great monied aris tocracy, here as in England, for it is the same system, with the exception of the paper currency, which the fi nanciers of England did not have cheek enough to ask for, and our bank ers did, and they got it, and the peo . pie have allowed them the privilege of issuing so long that they now. want the Fowler bill enacted into law, as a further plan for robbing the people. I am satisfied that we never can be an independent -people again, until we have thoroughly changed our fi nancial system, so that the govern ment through congress issues all pa per currency and allows free and un limited coinage of both gold and sil ver. Second, we must pay off the present bonded indebtedness, for we cannot stop the tendency of capital to 'go into the hands, of the few and Stroke Shattered My Nerves, Gave Up Preaching For Two Years. I suffered terribly with pain in my head, the - top of my head would feel hot I cou'd not study, and after striving for two years to ," wear the trouble off, I was compelled: to give no mv pastoral labor and retire to mv farm where I spent nearly two years trying to re cuperate. It was all ot oo avail. Physicians' treatment and patent medicines failed to re lieve me. I was exceedingly nervous and irritable and sometimes would shake terribly. I could not bear any noise. At the least ex citemrnt the blooa would rush to my face and head. Two years ago I was induced to try Dr. Miles' Restorative Nervine. After using one bottle I could see improvement in my condition so I continued taking it for nearly a year. I am happy to say I no longer have those pains in my head or nerv ous spells. My appetite is good and 1 am able to preach three times on Sunday with out fatigue. I consider Dr. Miles' Nervine the most wonderful medicine ever discov ered." Rev. D. Alex. Holman, Pastor U. B. Address Dr. Miles Medical Co, Elkhart, lad, continue to accumulate into large por tions, as long as we continue to pay interest; for it is a well-known fact that interest, no difference how low the rate, will eventually eat up the whole sum. This I think i plain com mon sense that everybody can under stand. Thirdly, the protective tariff has beenthe cause of too much capital being put in manufacturing enter prises. No country can afford to pvo tect any industries that produce more than they need at home. Now we have protected those interests until they were the best investments in the coun try; therefore capital flowed into them until they have become so strong that they propose to have this country run in their interest, regardless of other people's rights, and they will continue to do so as long as the people will al low them to do so. Then there is an other great cause why they oppress the laboring class, that is because so many of our people have learned to do only one kind of work for a living, that they are entirely dependent on the manufacturers for support and this I think is one of the worst feat ures of the case. It gives those un principled men control of their chances of supporting themselves and theii families, therefore their votes, and as long as this is so and the country peo ple go to the polls and divide their votes, ! I see no chance of changing present conditions. There are a num ber of other things that have a strong bearing on this subject, but this is getting too long already. I want to say one word about the reorganizers: it seems that all they want is to do anything that will induce the people to put them in power. So they get the loaves and fishes, but the people must, if they ever expect to take charge cf the government unite on the true prin ciples of just government; nothing else will save us. . I. W. ZORNES. Mountain Grove, Mo. TARIFF THE CAUSE. Editor Independent: There is no doubt that the greatest factor in the "causes of trusts," is the tariff. The "remedy," regardless of politi cal affiliations, can be had, by flood ing the president of the United States with letters, insisting on immedia'o and thorough action with the law; that is all sufficient to rid this coun try of dangerous trusts. As the salvation of the republic is of far more importance than that of individuals, or of party, let every pa triot write an urgent letter, shoeing the importance of immediate action. Yours sincerely, MARY E. WALKER. Oswego, N. Y. The Buccals and Baer Editor Independent: In the 17th and 18th centuries the pious Bucca neers sought God's protection in pray er before entering their robber fights and returned their gratitude for suc cess by celebrating Mass. ' Have we drifted away very much from the doc trines held by the pious Buccaneers in the 17th century? It would seem that we have not, if we look at the .doctrines held by the pious robbers, the captains of industry, as set forth by them, especially by coal barons as voiced by President Baer, the great and pious captain of industry. The world I nows what he said, but we will keep it fresh in the minds of the peo ple by repeating it. He said: "The rights and interests of the laboring men will be protected and cared for, not by labor agitators, but by the Christian men to whom God in h in finite wisdom has given control of the property interests of the country, and upon the successful management of '"hich so much, depends." I would ask if that does not sound like the doc trines of the pious Buccaneers? God is on their side, and has given them control of everything they can ob tain by robbery, or chicarry. No tice or rights of good feeling for these they rob. J. B. VAN COURT. Newton, la. HATCH PROTECTION The Jas. Bom Stiffened Gold Watch Canes are an improvement on solid gold cases. I thought when I ordered them that several men would be glad to take your paper; they seemed eager enough to read my pa per, but when asked to subscribe they stand off, and don't want to part with even sixty cents. By the way, the democrats around here are a queer set; they desire good government as much as a populist, but won't make an ef fort toward bringing it about; perhaps they are not so much to blame; they have followed Hill so long that now they don't know "where they are at." I am in hopes . the election returns knocked a little sense into their heads. As for the republicans they are "mullet heads" every one of tbem. They will curse the trusts till the air is blue, and then go to the polls and vote just as the trusts want them to. Ephraim is joined to idols; let him alone. Those howling republicans said the common people would continue to give us that dis honest fifty-cent dollar, as stated by The Independent. Say, Messrs. Howl ing Republicans, will, you tell us why you have continued to coin what you called a dishonest fifty-cent dollar? This dollar has stood the test for over a centv " of years, until you put that British patch on them. Say ,Mr. Edi tor, there are millions of us laboring men who wear patches on our pants who would like to go to Europe. Messrs. British Howlers, how ridic ulous it will make us feel when we must walk up to the counter and say, "Mr. Secretary, will you ' please put that British patch on this silver dol lar, so that the measley British gov ernment will know it by their British patch on them? Mr. Editor, the re publican party has become the great est betrayer of the common people, since Judas betrayed his master.
