Ile hath done all things well: He maketh hoth the deat to hear and the dumh to speak. Mark. 7: 87. lt is gratifyiug to see the wil lingness ok earnest Christ-inne to ohey the call ok our savior to evangelize the world. There oan not be too much of that spirit among us. FVhile engaged in sending out inissionarikks to all parts ok the earth, we want to stop and note with eare a partienlar phrase our savior uses in lIis eommand quoted above. lt is that phrase «every creature". That empha sizea the reseue of the singlss soul. Jesus has His saving eycs on each and erery human soul. The Churoh must have the miml and the eye of its Magister, and direct its efforts to save Fior sona rather than nationa. This thought is applicable t» the deak in a peenliar way. The deak-mute person is very mueh alone. He is more of an isolatesd creatnre than any one else on earth because he cannot com mune with fell()w-men in the ordinary way, hy hearing and speech. He lives in a world of silenoe. There are many deak. In the l"nited states alone, there are aooording to the last eensus 43,812 designated «deak and durnh," or 476 to the million of population: and. as many deak are not dumhv ahle to speak aomewhaL there must he hetween forty and fifty thou sand who can not hear. This does not include the hard of hearing. Ineluding the last awells the number to 90,000. But, al· though there are so many deak in this country and of eourae in every country nn earth, they are on the whole unnotieed, he eanse they are so scattered and never live in eolonies. We spealc ot them aa a das-, bnt they are rather scattered and estran ged individual-L But they are as much as any. included in the word-g used by our savior «every creature". They cannot, with a good don seienee, be ignored They must not he passed by. ln so doing we show a laek of ()hrist’s Sav— ing spirit even more So than when pas-sing by the door of our hearing neighbor. Christ did especially bestow His eare on the unkortunate among men. We all need Hirn because of our sin; they need Him, being like us in sin, hut also because they are handieapped kor like and thut bnrdened with spenial eares. 1t would he unjust to imply that the des-f have been alt-occ ither neglected «hy the Church; hat we believe that they have been much negleetech that tunc-h more oaght to be dane, especial ly by the lmtheran Churoh in the United states and in can-da. In such Inissions, while the aims are largely SpirituoL there are often in addition op eretions of a material character, with eppropriate attentsion to individual oases of need. Among Protestant (7hiirehea, the Protestant Episeopai may he eonsidered the pioneer, and it has taken up the work with considerable zeal and effectisu enens.
