    THE STATE FEDERATION.
Meets in Havelock January 3 and
4 to Look After Business.
The Nebraska State Federation
of Labor will meet in Havelock on
January 3 and 4 and a large and
enthusiastic meeting is predicted
by those interested in Federation
affairs. " Secretary Frank Hart has
been corresponding with the locals
throughout the state and finds
that the interest is very keen.
The Federation meets coinci
dent with the convening of the
legislature, and if the plans of
those who organized the body are
carried out the legislature will be
besieged by a labor lobby intent
on getting some legislation worth
while for the wage earners of the
state. President Coffey has been
in a hospital ai "t. Louis for the
past three wee.s and has been
unable to take an active part in
working up interest in the con
vention, but this matter has been
well attended to by other officials.
A meeting of unionists in Lin
coln and Havelock will be held
shortly to look after the local ar
rangements. It is feared that the
hotel accommodations at Have
lock will be too small, but the del
egates will be amply provided for
without inconvenience to them.
COFFEY MUCH BETTER.
Lincoln Delegate to St. Louis Im
proving Rapidly.
A private letter from Frank M.
Coffey, who represented the Lin
coln Central Labor Union at the
St. Louis convention, conveys the
pleasing information that he is
rapidly improving. Mr. Coffey
expects to be able to return to
Lincoln the latter part of this
week or the first of next.
Several months ago he under
went a surgical operation to cure
an injured leg, and while in the
hospital he caught cold. He went
to St. Louis before he was really
able to travel, and while there
suffered a relapse.
As soon as his illness developed
Mr. Coffey was taken to the
American hospital, where his
wants have been attended to un
der the supervision of the Ameri
can Federation of Labor.

THE MACHINISTS.
Havelock and Lincoln Will Each
Have a Local.
The Lincoln and Havelock
branch of the International asso
ciation of .Machinists held a
meeting Sunday afternoon in
Lancaster hall in Havelock for
the purpose of dividing the or
ganization into its two parts, the
Havelock and the Lincoln. F.
Eklund, business agent of the or-
crease of 5 per cent in the salary
of clerks receiving $100 a month
and up who have not received in
creases within the last twelve
months.
der west of Chicago, presided.
Two men from Lincoln and two
from Havelock were appointed
a committee with power to choose
another member for the purpose
of drawing up the readjustment
articles. The Havelock organi
zation will take out a new char
ter, the Lincoln branch having
been the original. Now the shop
town membership has grown so
much that the combined body is
unwieldly. Immediately after the
Sunday meeting the Havelock
branch elected the following of
ficers: J. A. Malstead, president;
J. R. Greenwood, financial secre
tary; J. R. Slessher, ercording
secretary. W. R. Greenwood was
appointed the official delegate to
the State federation, which meets
in Havelock in January.

The record of the Farmers &
Merchants Insurance Co. is a
record to be proud of. It is a Ne
braska concern, maintaining its
home offices in Lincoln, and aid
ing in the upbuilding of the city
and state. It is offering the best

Start the Children Right
By inculcating habits of thrift A savings bank
account is the best lesson. Deposit a small sum
with us in the name of the son or daughter, give
him ot her the pass book, then urge the deposit
of all pennies and dimes instead of spending
them for candy. Explain what they gain by the
4 per cent interest we pay. Nothing better in
the way of a Christmas gift could be given the
boy or girl than the nucleus of a savings bank
account
