Long Distance Phone The Awful Drain Upon Nebraska Did you ever stop and think about the awful financial drain put upon Nebraska by the annual payments of premiums for insur ance, fire and life, carried in com panies organized and maintaining their, headquarters in other states ? The drain is something terrific. By the time 1910 closes the pol icyholders of Nebraska will have paid to foreign insurance com panies upwards of $30,000,000 in premiums for the twelve mo of the year. Of this vast sum less than 40 per cent, is returned in the way of commissions and losses. This means that $18,000,000 of Ne braska money was in 1910, sent east where it remains to build up eastern business instead of west ern business. If sent to Nebras ka it is sent in the shape of loans drawing 6 or 7 per cent interest, thus adding to the annual drain upon Nebraska resources. The moment a money stringency shows itself this money is called in, embarrassing Nebraska busi ness institutions. Looked at in whatever light possible, the habit we have culti vated of giving the bulk of our insurance business to foreign con cerns is founded on shortsighted ness little short of criminal. Nebraska offers to Nebraskans some insurance companies as re liable and as prompt as any that maintain palatial headquarters in Hartford, Milwaukee, New York. The premums they earn are in vested in Nebraska; their expense accounts are paid to Nebraska cit izens, thus adding to the volume of Nebraska business. Their surplus funds are invested in Ne braska loans, and a money strin gency has no appreciable effect upon general business insofar as these home companies are con cerned. Instead of helping foreign in surance corporations to build pal aces in eastern cities, let us "so handle our insurance affairs as to build up our own Nebraska cit Let us pay salaries to our own c izens to care for our insurance, in stead of paying swollen salaries to eastern men who deal more seriously in "high finance" than in anything else. Let us employ Ne braskans instead of men a thou sand miles away. Let us build up our own insurance corporation instead of those of other states. The money spent by Nebras kans for insurance, life or fire, should be spent with eNbraska concerns. They afford insurance as safe, and prompt and as econ omical as any offered by reliable companies anywhere. Let us all work together for the upbuilding of Nebraska business institutions ! Building For Nebraska. The insurance carried by Ne braskans upon their homes should be carried in a company that not only does business in Nebrasak, but maintains its head offices in Nebraska. Such a company is the Union Life Insurance Co. of Lin coln. It is one of the oldest fire insurance companies in the west, with a long record of successful business behind it. It pays Ne- r.'is its supplies in Nebraska, invests its surplus in Nebraska. Its pol icyholders are contributing the upbuilding of an institution that means much for the future of the Something to Interest Him. It was the evening when her week ly caller always made his appearance. "I wish I had something new and en tertaining to show him," said the girl to her mother. "If you'd only mentioned it in time," said her father, "I'd have brought home my account book with the dry goods, millinery, stationery and con fectionery bills for the last three months all itemized and balanced. I'll venture to say that would entertain him." Youth's Companion. The First Anthracite Coal.
