The first object in view in the setting aside of a day that should be called "Labor Day" was that the workinsrmen of this country would have a day which they could call their very own in a most particular sense. It was intended that he should, with his family and friends, gather with his fellows and their families and friends and forget for the moment the trials of his daily exis tence. The enjoyment of the occasion was to take the form of celebrations of this sort at some suitable and accessible place. On the other hand. Labor Day was set aside that some recognition would be given to the great work which the laborer per forms for his city, his country and himself. Every other great act of history and of our times is fittingly commemorated by a holi day of some sort, and it was recognized that the great and glorious task of daily toil should not go by unnoticed. The state took this much notice of the fact that labor really existed and set aside this day as desired by the organized workers. On our own behalf we should at least do as much. There is no reason why all organized workingmen should not get together on this particular day and take account of their standing. It will be found, we are sure, that there is plenty to do at this time in the way of keeping alive the or ganizations of which they are members. Especially is this true of the larger and more powerful unions. The bigger they are the more attention they attract' and the more satisfaction there would be to smash them. Employers are not overlooking a bet along this line, and if any union, no mat ter how powerful, believes that any employ er or set of employers is going to allow them to exist out of some philanthropic or economical motive, they are doomed to wake up some fine morning and discover that they are beseiged by some powerful combination of employers. There are fair employers as well as un fair ones, but the latter greatly predom inate, and the old story about the leaven in the bread still holds good. This brings us to the really pertinent significance of the day. If we should celebrate, we should also be united in the celebration. Why should this or that organization stand aloof in this matter Is it not the concern of all, for the moment any union, however independ ent it may have been, finds itself in trouble, the first and instinctive act is to appeal to the brother unionists they have heretofore disregarded. This is the lesson of Labor Day. Do not get together only when your selfish inter est is involved, but stay together at all times and do your share in helping the ones to whom you yourself will appeal if you get . into trouble. If we can learn this lesson. Labor Day will have attained its end and will justify its existence. Balti more Leader. Elliott Bros. TAILORS 142 South 12th St. Lincoln, Ncbr.
