Mr. Tellman, who was in the fourth story of the structure, presumed that Mr. Christy was in the basement where he had been working with a blow torch. It is not known whether the fire was due to the explosion of the torch or to a dust explosion. Attempt to Escape From Prison End ed in Death. , Convict J. G. Farrell, who tried to escape from the. penitentiary cornfield Tuesday morning, is believed to have met death in trying to swim Salt Creek. His two companions, Joseph Fielding and Charles J. Bowers, who were recaptured, adhere to their first story that Farrell sank in the water when the three tried to swim across about eight rods south of the iron bridge west of the penitentiary. They have been questioned and both tell an apparently straight-forward story of Farrell's death. An examination of the banks of the creek corroborate their story in that three sets of track approach the creek and only two sets were found on the west bank where the men came out of the water. All were trusties who were at work hoe ing corn in the prison field west-of the the penitentiary. Farrell was serving a term of one and one-half years from Douglas county. As his term expired the first of September he was allowed to work in the field. FAVORS WORKING AGREEMENT. Mover Would Not Oppose a Union of Federations. For the first time in the history of the organiza tion the convention was thrown open to the entire public. GALLS DOWN MALEDICTIONS His Neck' Was Not Broken By the Slipping of the Rope Body Cut Down After Nineteen Minutes. Calling down maledictions upon the Roman priesthood, and shouting in Italian "Long live Italy, long live the protestants," Guiseppe Alia, the mur derer of Father Heinrichs was carried to the death trap and exactly at 8:30 o'clock Wednesday night, at Canon City, Colo., paid the extreme penalty of his crime. Alia's neck was not broken, owing to the slipping of the rope and he died of strangulation. After nineteen min utes Alia's body was cut down and he was pronounced dead. Guiseppe Alia's crime, the murder of Father Leo Heinrichs, of the Order of Franciscan monks, at the alter rail in St Elizabeth's church' in Denver while the priest was administering the sacrament of the Eucharist, struck horror to the heart of every person in Denver and awakened anxiety all over the Catholic world lest it should prove the beginning of a general plan of priest murder. Alia had been in Denver several weeks, unemployed and apparently penniless. Early on the morning of Sunday, February 23, according to his story, he was aroused from sleep by the ringing of the chimes in St. Eliza beth's church. He arose, dressed him self hurriedly and walked out to the church, led by the musical tones peal ing forth a call to worship. But he went not with the thought of thanks giving in mind, for he declared, and many times repeated, after his arrest that the chimes recalled wrongs ex perienced- in his native -Italy, and at tributed by him to the church. Enter ing the church, Alia went through the usual ceremony of blessing himself with holy water, and then seated him self where his view of the altar would be unobstructed. There he followed the ritual up to the point where com munion is given to all who are pre pared. Alia approacned the altar and kneel ing, awaited the arrival of the priest officiating at the communion, not knowing, Alia has said, or caring who it should be. A number of other communicants had assumed the -same posture and positions at the communion rail were practically all taken. When Father Leo beloved by all who knew him both in and outside the church ap peared with the consecrated wafers, all at the rail seemed impressed with the solemnity and sacredness of the service and inspired with thoughts of God. Alia, however, according to his own statement, could barely restrain a desire to spring at the throat of the priest, despite the place, the" scene and the peculiarly sacred character of the action in progress. Along the line passed the priest, placing upon the tongue of , each suc cessive communicant the consecrated wafer and repeating the lines of the mass declaring the Eucharist thus ad ministered is the Savior himself In person. Alia was now the next in line. Father Leo placing the wafer upon the tongue of the stranger, all un suspecting of the murderous design in Alia's heart, began: "Take, eat; this is my body " but stopped horror-stricken. The subject of the prayer had spat the blessed morsal from his mouth. Almost simultan eousyl with this desecration a shot rang out and Father Leo sank to the floor mortally wounded. Adams immediately stepped to the jury box and shook hands with each of the jurors and thanked them for finding him not guilty. He also thanked the members of the Western Federation of Miners who are here for their support and encouragement during his long imprisonment and trial. Adams left the court room with William Easterly, another prominent federat'onist, and joined Mrs. Adams at the hotel where she had been stay ing during the trial. No move was made to re-arrest Adams on any other murder charges growing out of the Colorado labor troubles, and it is said he will be. per mitted to go free as the authorities ar convinced of the impossibility of securing a conviction in any of the cases.
