Romance of Fifteen Years Duration
Ends Happily.
Some of the elements of a first
class romance are contained In the
marriage of Miss Ida B. Stahl of New
port, Neb., and Frank B. Paris of
Webb, Idaho, In Spokane, Dec. 15. The
ceremony was performed in the court
house by Judge Stocker. They plighted
their troth in the Nebraska town fif
teen years ago, when Mr. Paris was a
struggling clerk. But Dame Fortune
wore wrinkles more than nine years,
so he came west to carve himself a
fortune out of the forest, afterward es
tablishing himself in business. In the
meantime the bride taught in the pub
lic schols of Newport. A week ago
the once struggling -clerk, now a pros
perous merchant, sent for his sweet
heart and half an hour after her ar
rival in Spokane they were married.
They have gone to their home in Idaho,
of which they have been dreaming fif
teen years.

SHORTAGE OF MOTIVE POWER.
This Said to Be Real Cause of Failure
to Move Trains.
A systematic inspection of the ter
minal railroad yards in Kansas City
shows that there are 3,000 empty
freight cars standing idle in the yards
there because the railroads have not
sufficient motive power to move them.
There are not less than one thousand
loaded cars standing in the yards and
the dates of loading on some of them
showed, that they had ben ready to
rtujfyeV for two weeks. There is no
Shortage of cars, but a shortage of en
gines. "''.
At Sedalia, Mo., there are 261 empty
freight cars by actual count and at
Springfield there are 379. At Topeka,
Kas., there are more than 300 empty
cars in the yards; at Wichita about
200, and at Hutchinson about fifty
cars."

Delay On the Campanile.
The work of rebuilding the Campan
ile at Venice, which collapsed July 14,
1902, is not being pushed owing to a
controversy as to the method of con
struction and the material to be used.
A propositon has been made to settle
the differences of opinion by a referendum.
The Useful Dado.
Nothing is more economical in wall
decoration than a dado. As the lower
part of the walls become soiled more
quickly than the upper, a room can
often be freshened simply by renewing
the dado without touching the upper
walls. Another advantage of the dado
is that it gives a. room a comfortable
and furnished appearance without the
addition of a lot of furniture. This is
particularly true of a hall or stairway
where there is a lot of space that needs
breaking up.

The dahlia, that fine and large
flower 'which adorns our autumn gar
dens, is reconquering the place whiclj
has been usurped for some years by
its Japanese sister, the chrysanthe

what it formerly lacked, variety, and
its shades how rival those of the more
popular flower. Le Figaro. t
