ness of several months.
Mr. Cuming, received his appointment
s Secretary of this Territory, in 8ol
from President Pierce. On the death of
Gov. Francis Burt, in the fall of that year,
he became Acting Governor of the Ter
ritory, which office he held Until the ap
pointment of Mark W. Izard, was made
to fill the vacancy caused by the death of
Gov. Burt.
The first Legislature was convened and
a Territorial government organized
under the administration of Mr. Cuming.
He has since, at various times, held the
position of Acting Governor.

The Missouri River is still rising.
Alathew L. McCaslin, is about erecting

the Platto . River and Running . Water
Wntjort Road.

C. C. Goss, of this city, will return to
Nebraska, about the first of May. His
Pott Office address, for a few weeks, will
lie Belleville, Ohio. Wrtingfroin Phila
delphia, he says: " There will La a rush
westward in the spring. Many wall go to
Bellevue. ,Moat of the Lectures delivered
this winter, are for cl arity purposes. I
have Jdelivercd my leuuro on Nebraska,
several times, for the benefit of the poor,
and felt glud that I could do so much for
for tlriso of my Father's family, who
vere suffering for the want of bread."
Tho Court House for this County has
teen located on Elk Hill. It is to be a
iva ftory building, CO by 40 feet on the
ground. The fint story is to be built of
fctouc, and the tipper one of trick. The
contract for excavating and building the
stone work, has been let to Lerew Broth
ers. The Bellevue Library Association, are
in receipt of Commodore Perry's Japan
Expedition, Pacific Railroad Surveys, and
Pule nt Office Reports, from Hon. Fenn
er Ferguson, to whom they return their
thanks.
A. N. Briggs has commenced to dig a
cellar on Hancock street, where he will
erect a dwelling.
The Ladies Benevolent Society, will
meet at Mrs. Rogers', next Thursday.
