Local & Miscellaneous. Rblioioui Noncr. Quarterly Meet ing exercises will tale place on Saturday .and Sunday next. Preaching on Satur day evening, at 7 o'clock, :nid un Sunday at 10 1-2, by Rev. Mr. Chivinjton, Pre .siding Elder of . the District. Tnt 'Ladies' Udhbvolemt Sooiett, of this city, will meet neat Thursday af ternoon, at the School IIouee,t2 o'ulwck. Bellcvue. " It's an ill wind that Pjlows ncbody any good." We believe t'.his to be true in our case. Notwithstand ing the hard times and the scarcity of money, Bellevue never advanced in point cf .improvement, as she has for the last -sixty-dya ; and from the number of foi-n- dations being commenced and buildings :in the process of erection, we augur great er improvements during the fall. The nu unerous pine and brick buildings, so rapid ity rising into hugg and magnificent pro portions, are the kind of advertisements we like to see, indicitive of permanent prosperity. There is no -rl lace of the im portance of Bellevue, ou the Missouri, where property, real estate,) can be 'bought as cheap as it can here. There has never been a kiting value upon our city lots, or the adjoining lands. Several large sales of real estate, -were made last week, 10 parties from St. Louis, at good prices, for gold, not rags or notes on time. . Em igration, capital, and enterprise, willl seek an investment in those pluces where the golden harvest of future wealth is known to be. Such a place is Bellevue. Improvements. Wm. A. Gwyer is -erecting on Main Street, a two story brick building. The lower story will be used for a store, and the upper, for a dwelling. The Fo:tenele Bank building is pro gressing finely. It is being built of supe rior brick and when completed, will make a fine building. . Masons are engaged on Mr. Bulkeley's new brick store, near the Fontenelle Dank building. It will be an ornament to our city, when finished. The brick work for Wattles &. Spear's Livery Stable, on Main Street, is now .completed. 'Still They Come. An link no. vn friend, who claimed that "the name was diot in the bargain," left us two superior Water Melons, last Tuesday. They were considered A. No. 1. ' Mr. Myers, also, has our thanks for a basket of excellent plums. , The Missouri River is getting ex trcmcly low, and it is with difficulty that toots can get over the bar, between Coun cil Bluffs lower landing and Omaha. 'Boat Arrivals. The E. A. Ogden arrived at our landing, Sept. 10, discharg ing passengers and freight. She is a good boat, and her officers are gentlemen. Tbe E. M. R viand touched at our wharf, Sept. 10, and landed passengers and freight. She is new, and considered the "crack" boat in the Missouri trade. We cannot but feel a little personal pride, that our old friend, Cnpt. A. Jacobs, was her builder, and is truly a monument to his skill. Her obliging officers have our thanks for St. Louis papers. The fast and elegant steamer Carrier, arrived at our levee, Sept. 12, on her second trip in the upper Missouri trade. 'She discharged passengers, and freight for our merchants. Her passengers spoke in terms of praise, of her commander, tCapt. Wm. C. Postal, and John A. Scud der, her Clerk. We know that Mr. S. is true gentleman. The Carrier will con tinue in our trade, till die close of navi gation. Our readers will do well to re member her. Her Clerk has our thanks for St. Louis papers. .. The St. Joe packet, Watosba, arrived "Sept. 13, upward bound. She discharged passengers and freight. The Emma came up Sept 13, and dis charged a quantity of freight at our levee. Late papers received, for which, gentle tnen of the Einma, you.iave our thanks and best wishes. Bbick and Lumber. Those in want of brick and lumber, of superior quality, will do well to remember our friend Joseph E. Pray. He is doing a large business at his Brick Yard. We obserr d a few days since, that he has a large kiln containing 20S.0OO brick, not yet opened, and is putting up another, to con lain 100,000. Teams are now hauling large quantities of brick from his Yard, for the Fontenelle Bank,.and other build ings. ' Mr. P. is also selling good pine lumber, at reduced prices. ' We call the attention of our readers, to the advertisement of Jos. W. Lowrie, in our columns. Meats. 11. Cook Griffith is now aell-j ing at his Market, on Mission Avenue, Beef, Veal, and Mutton, at reduced pri ces. As Mr. (J. takes particular pains to patronize the farmers of Sarpy County, we presume the citizens of Bellevue, will see tho propriety of giving their patron age to him. Hekeepsquiteasgood meats and sells as cheap as the butchers of Iowa. Oliver, Wright &. Co., carpenters, late of Pacific City, now employed on Bulkc ley's new building, are prepared to do any work our citizens may want. S. M. Tike has received a new stock of goods. Give him a call Concerts. The Thayer Family, con sisting of Misses i Josephine, Rosalie, Pauline, and Master Willie, gavo two vocal and instrumental concerts in this city, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, of this week. They discoursed good music and delighted those that heard them. Spark ing Sunday Night, The Female Auction eer, and other sentimental Songs, were hugely enjoyed by the young men that are troubled with tendrr nnotiont. We call attention to tho card of Dr. W. H. Longsdorf, in to-day's paper. Tho Dr. is a graduate of the Jefferson Medi cal College, and Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, of Philadelphia. He has located permanently in Bellevue, and we take pleasure in recommending him to the favorable consideration of this com munity. We know from the testimonials he brings with him, from his native state, he is just the physician we need in the west. Glad to see it. We notice that the frjends of Chapman, in Bellevue, who made bets on the election of Chapman, have given up the money. Who ever heard of a Bellevueian doing a dishon orable or disreputable deed, either politi cally or otherwise. No, sir-ee, they have got the nerve, whether fighting the tiger or a politician. New Buildino Material. New in ventions of a practical character, and in very important departments of industry are multiplied and fait multiplying. A new material for building is now used in Paris, it is said, consisting of a concrete, the larger part of which is oshes. Slabs are now made, seven meters long by six meters wide, (a meter being39,37 inches,) w hile its strength is such that slabs of that length do not require beams of vaulting beneath them. The inventor offers to furnish all parts of a house, floors, roofs, exterior ornaments, cellars, drains, paving flags, etc., with this material, as hard as the best stone. This seems allied with Mr. llardinge's discovery, or if different from it, the two together may lead to re sults of immense val ie. Steeled Rails. The Rensselaec Iron Works, of Troy, N. V., are making rails with the thickness of half an inch of catt steel on the head. The steel is old scrap cast-steel, worked twice before welding in the rail pile. After going into the pile, the rail is worked and finished the sume as ordinary rails. Some of these steeled head rails were put down some time ago in one side of the" track near the Albany engine house of the New York Central road. Mr. Gray, Chief Engineer, says they wore out six times the amount of common rails. Tne Albany rfrgwi states that one hundred tuns are making for the Galena and Chicngo road, at switches. The rails of this kind already used show no signs of the steel splitting off. The cost is $'20 a ton over the coet of ordinary rails. A Wonderful Machine. The Dud ley Observatory, recently established ot Albany, New York, under the auspices of Mr. Dudley's munificence and the elo quence of Mr. Everett, has been present ed with a calculating engine, the opera tion of which in one of the marvels of mod ern science. This extraordinary inven tion is the work of a Swedish mechani cian, and the labor of twenty years. It was built at Stockholm, and to aid in us com' pletion, the Swedish government has at different times given more than ten thou- sand dollars. With prepared formula, it will do the work of four computers. It will calculate almost any description of mathematical table, and not only calculate, but stereotype and print Uiem. Counterfeit. All red tinted bills of the denomination of five dollars on the Lee Bank, Mass., are counterfeit. There are many of them in circulation. In Philadelphia there is a widow Iadv who has twenty-five children, all living at home and none of them married. MASOMC XOTIC'E. A The regular meetings of Nebraska Lodge. No. of Free and Accepted Masont, will meet in Masonic Hall, semi-monthly, on Tues day eveliing, at 7 o'clock. L. B. KINNEY, W. M. MARRIED.
