News from the Plains.
A painful rumor has reached us, thnt
one hundred and fifiy V, S. Soldiers and
tentnsters have been murdered by the In
dians, west of Fort Kearney and as it
has rot been tontn.dic;ed, we fear that the
worst hns not been told. The Pacific city
Enterprise toys that "dipt. Dixon enme
down on the United States steamt r Mink
yesterday inominc and reported the loss
of many of our soldiers, in a conflict with a
large body of the Cheyennes and Arrn pa
hoes, two hundnd miles west of Fort
Kearney.
The Messenger who brought the new?,
reached St. Mary's on last Saturday.
His name is YelluinJeer, nn old French
trader, whose statements are perfectly re
liable. II j Mated to C.ipt. Dixon, Col.
Sarpy and others, that eleven days before,
he hud left Col. Sumner, who told him that
be sent one hundred soldiers and fifty
teamsters a little in udvance of his main
body; when they were attacked I y a large
body of C'leyeni. i an I Arrapthoes, an I
all were slain; that he intend d to proceed
directly in pursuit of the enemy, and wouid
not pause until he hnd revenged the loss
of hiscompi t riots and punished the savage
hordes who had butchered them.

The Philadelphia LeJgtr rnys. that
Hon. Stephen A. Douglass thiul'S thnt
the way lo subdue the Mormons totibedi
enee to ihe Federal authorities, is lo re
peal the organic act I lotting the territo
rial government out of existence. The
country w uld then revert to its primitive
condition, under ihe solo ntd exclusive
jurisdiction of the United States Govern
ment, and ihe Mormons could be punished
in any Sn'o or Territory. It will be time
enough to try that remedy when other
more legitimate inans fail. At present,
the Government is entraged in the work
of enforcing lh authority of the laws, 1 y
sending; out a force rufHcient to m.-inin
the Federal officers. We bhnll then
probably know whelhei the stories of
Mormon outrages are exaggeration or
not. Nothing nppenrs to be so lively as
the imacirintion of letter-writers for the
press, and they often epice their articles
the more abundantly the more difficult it
H to reach a timely refutation. The show
of earnest in enforcing it power has al
ways been sufficient with the mo t oldu
rate opp;r.s of the Government's au
thority. IJrbbam Young is n fool,
however his followers may be. He will
