STEAM AND HOT
WATER HEATING
c. H. SOMMER.
Steani is easily conveyed from the
boiler to every room, in concealed
pipes and modern radiation Is beauti
ful and sightly. It never contami
nates the air of the house with
odors, nor with air front which the
oxygen has been burned. The amount
of heat In each room Is not depend
ent npon the wind and there are no
air ducts to make a possible lane for
fire.
Hot water heating Is Identical with
steam except that the principle of
latent heat usealde In steani Is not
used In' hot water and the high tem
perature attained in steani ts not
necessary with hot water. The entire
system, boiler, pipes and radiators is
filled with water. The expansion
through heat sends hot water to
eaf-h radiator. As it cools It con
tracts and becomes heavier and this
heavier water flows down the return
pipes to again be heated in the
boiler.
Hot water needs mors radiation for
it does not attain as much heat as
steani. On the other hand the greater
volume of hot water radiation cools
more slowly, or ‘holds’ the heat. In e
home this advantage is marked be
cause the temperature la held
throughout the night with greater
ease.
Hot water systems are impossible
of explosion and steam systems prac
tically so for modern radiators can
withstand 30 and 40 times the pres
sure attainable in a system.

Workmen welcomed with a re
newed activity the beautiful wrather
of the last week and the walla of
concrete masonry of the Ideal Fire
safe home are rapidly reaching the
eecond-story point.
To those unacquainted with what
Is concrete masonry the work being
done by Harry Roesslg of the
Diamond generate at this site will
he very Interesting. Built solidly
upon a 12-Inch wide basement founda
tion th< masonry wills are going up
eight Inches wide—with an air cham
ber In the center. The work is quite
feet but each block Is being set with
care and exactitude.
Mill work from M. A. Dlebrow &
Co. Is on the ground and window
frames are set each In place and
solidly anchored In concrete. Just
Incidentally the mill work Is of a
high grade and up to date each item
has come out to Job ‘‘right” to the
fraction of the inch. Interior fix
tures are being completed at the
mill at Eleventh and Nlcholns and
will be ready for Instant call when
needed.
During the coming week It Is ex
pected that C. I.. Rodstrom, the
plumber, will rough In some of his
work, and Charles Sommer will be
right with him in preparing the heat
ing plan. Rodstrom declares that
the plumber has to be on thb job
every bit of the time during the con
struction of the house for his work
must march along to fit in with the
construction.
‘‘When are you going to bring nut
those fine Crane fixtures we se
lected?” we asked Rodstrom.
"Just as late as I can,” he said.
"Fixtures of that or of any quality
are not things to' be set up while
heavy construction work Is going on,
and we don’t want to set any of
them In and have an accident hap
pen to one of them.”
Construction men ere taking a
great Interest In the Meyer steel form
concrete floor. Quite a number have
stopped by and given it an inspec
tlo'n and remarked upon its many
advantages In a house. The fact that
It is made of Haydite material for
the cement interests everyone, and
every now and then some one wants

Bright-Colored Homes*
L. J. Millard of the Independent
I.umber company predicts that dur
ing the coming year some of the
homes in Omaha will be finished in
brightly colored stuccos, and exterior
wall coverings whose colors will
match rainbow hues.
“California and Florida are seeing
houses put up with wonderful Italian
pinks, brilliant blues and greens, and
color combination! which heretofore
have only been seen in foreign coun
tries,” he said. Mr. Millard has just
returned from a trip to California.
New Plumbing Concern.
M. A. Schneider, master plumber,
has established an Independent
Plumbing concern in connection with
C. H. Sommer, heating specialist at
2202 South Sixteenth. Mr. Schneider

“The Chiodone” Believed to
Mark New Era of Develop
ment on South Twenty
Fourth Street.
The formal opening of "The
Chiodone,” 1105 South Twenty fourth
street, will mark what Is believed to
be tne beginning of a new era of de
velopment of this north and south
thoroughfare.
This new community building Is
ow-ned by V. P. Chlodo and was erect
ed under his personal supervision. It
Is a fireproof building of substantial
design, and both exterior and interior
are finished In soft tones, with enough
refinements to please without Jarring
the sensibilities.
The ballroom, which has a small
stage, Is 97 by 54 feet and can accom
modate J.000 persons comfortably. Ad
joining it there ’ a reception room
with settees and too large paintings,
"First Phot at Torktown" and "Colum
bus Discovering America." The build
ing also has several rooms suitable for
lodge meetings.
The building is 175 feet long and
Is of concrete and steel construction.
The policy of the ballroom will be to
permit it* use by societies and clubs
[or dances and similar social events.
Mr. Chiodo said be built this splen
did structure with the thought that
eventually Twenty-fourth street will
he Omaha's great thoroughfare.
Improvement club people in the
vicinity of the new Chiodo community
building are now importuning the city
official to establish a psrk and play
ground on the vacant tract along
Twenty-fourth street, between Popple
ton avenue and Hickory street.

A thermo valve shuts off the heat
when the water has attained the de

that temperature. The use of water
brings fresh cold water into the tank
and the valve immediately starts the

WALL PAPERS ARE

Style* change 1n home decoration
and the edict of decorator* that walls

“Sommer Beats Winter”
June In Every Room
» How have you gone through the Winter—
with shivers and shakes or with comfort
and content? If your home hasn't been
comfortable, now is a good time to think
about putting it right. §
The only heat that heats a house all over—evenly—com
fortably—that gives the joy of June to erery room—is radia
tor heat.
Radiation is the even distribution of heat. And unleas
l s heat is evenly distributed a house can’t be evenly warm.
Then, too, moist sir at 68 degrees feels warmer than dry air
at 72.
Yes, now is the time to think about your next Winter’s
heating problem, '’hen you don’t need heat—in the Spring
and Summer months—is the time to install a new heating plr.nt
or have the old or.e put in order.
Heat bv radiator. That's the way to more comfort end
better health. 1 1
