F. Baxter, president, of Thomas Kil
patrick company, told members of the
Rotary club Wednesday noon at Hotel
Fontenelle. Baxter has spoken to n
number of luncheon clubs on the Uni
versity of Omaha, Its work and
growth. '•

to Omaha in the city university.” said
Baxter. “It furnishes to the residents
of moderate means an opportunity for
education without leaving home, and
it brings in a steadily Increasing num
ber of students. Families also come
to make their residence here.
Nonsectarian.
"The University of Omaha has been
here 17 years and was organized
along broad lines. Dr. D. E. Jenkins,
president, has devoted his life to the
^preation of the institution. It is co
^educatlnnal and nonsectarian. More
than 1.000 students were registered In
the University of Omaha last year
and the freshmen class this year
numbers 196.
The university has developed until
It is now on a paying basis. The
point is. now reached where it can
grow-.
“The university is well located for
service to the large number of stu
dents that attend, especially night
classes.”

Baxter explained that a fund of $100,
000 is to be raised for the University
of Omaha, of which Mrs. Sarah Jos
lyn will give $30,000. “We have al
ready raised $35,000," said Baxter. "A
building committee is to be appointed
and plans are under way for a new
building on the campus next fall.”

"Wonderful crowds are coming to
Omaha for the week-end and they are
buying In large quantities, according
to Hurt Clough, vice president of the
bankrupt M. K. Smith company.
. .Clough lias been chairman of the
market week committee for four
years, and was succeeded this year by
Percy Powell of the McCord Brady
company.
Other Omaha wholesalers are quite
optimistic. At the Beebe-Runyan com*
pany Don Lee sal dthe merchants are
buying furniture in large quantities.
This is also true at the McCord*
Brady company, according to Percy
Powell and at the Klrkendali Shoe
company, Roy Moore said.

of Commerce, secretary of the mar*
ket week, said 1.000 merchants are
Wltpecfed in Omaha Thursday for the
l^f-rize drawing contest.
"The present week has been a big

Insurance Broker and
Kivvanis Leader Dies
William Lincoln Byrne, 49, insur
ance broker and organizer of the
Omaha Kiwanis dub, died Monday
afternoon at 4:30 at his home, 2909
Hickory street, after an Illness of
more than two months. Death was
due to cancer.
Mr. Byrne was born In Baltimore,
Md., in 1876. die came to Omaha in
1904, a year after his brother, Harry
S. Byrne arrived in Omaha. After
living in Omaha a few years, Mr.
Byrne moved to St. Louis, Mo., where
he lived until 1914. In the fall of
1914 he returned to Omaha and lived
here since.
Mr. Byrne was active In Masonic
circles, being a 32d degree Mason. He
was also active in politics. In the
last city election he was a candidate
for city commissioner. Mr. Byrne was
also a member of the Elks.
Besides his wife he is sur.vived by
one son, William Lincoln, Jr.; two
brothers, Walter S., assistant treas
urer of the Thomas Kilpatrick com
puny, and Harry S. Byrne.

day afternoon at 2 from Burket fun
eral home. Burial will be in I.oudon
park cemetery in Baltimore, Md.

"Various parts of the state have
been found to have corn that will not
germinate," Mr. Glllan said, "lhis Is
especially true In northeastern • Ne
braska, where the corn has been
found to he soft and not matured."

physical examinations twice each
year.
