May Wheat as Heavy as It

Last Prices at Feeble Re
covery From Bottom.
Hr CHARLES J. LEYDEN.
1 nheraal Service Staff 4 orrespondent.
Chicago. March 11.—Distinct weakness
at Liverpool and Buenos Aire* upset bull
ish calculations In the wheat nit today
ana led to a se\ere decline. May wheat
was ag heavy as it was buoyant the pre
J'°u* day, selling down lo fl SO1; or
4 '4 cents below the previous close. Last
prices were at a f*»eble recovery from
the bottom. Mediocre export trade
«e---ed to weaken the market.
''heat, finished S’* to 5 \ cents lower;
corn was 1 to 1 \ cents lower; oats
Vtro '4» cent down and rye ruled o*4 to
t cents off
There was heavy selling of wheat cred
1 ted to *n eastern operator that ran the
market Into forced liquidation. Buying
through scattered commission houses and
local professionals stopped the break. The
swings were erratic most of t ho day
vvith all flurries meeting pressure Do
mestic news was inclined to favof the
bulls, but It counted for little.
The soal>oard confirmed export sales
or .00.00*' to 250.000 bushels wheat. Liv
erpool closed 2*4 pence lower. Spot
wheat abroad was also weak.
Corn broke early with wheat, but met
good aupport on t he dip, and recovered
^‘1 Outside points were after corn In
the Chicago market, and some grades
advanced 2 ^ cents relative to the fu
tures. The run of corn from the coun
try ig moderating some, and an improved
4nqulrv for terminal stocks is hoped for.
Oats displayed relati\o steadiness com
pared with other grains. The increased
foreign demund for oats coupled with a
livelier domestic inquiry has induced
ehort covering on a big scale as well
as attracting fresh support.
B.ve tumbled with wheat. Liquidation
continued and gave signs of being over
late ;n the dav.
Provisions were easy all day. Lard fin
ished 25 to Hi1* cents lotver and ribs
closed 20 cents lower.
Pit Notes.
Foreign news has been coming bearish
for several jjays Cables from the other
side said that the pressure of' grain on
the ocean was making itself felt and that
sales there were being made below cost.
Foreign demand for North American
grain for several week*, with few excep
Hc-Ps. has been insistently indifferent
Meanwhile, although domestic conditions
have been improved, thev failed to over
come the world developments.
Eastern advices told of the best domes
tto milling demand for weeks. Locally
and at outside points premiums on wheat
were steady today, although prices eased
•with the futures. The movement of
wheat to terminal markers was leas
than the shipments out. and clearances
from ports for the day were of fn’r *»'•
1 ut too manv current prices discount all
that is bullish.
Considerable pressure on the July de
livery was Induced as a result of snow
fail over pgrfts of the droughty southwest
winter wheat area. However, Jaier ad
vices had it that the snow was less than
one quarter inch and that many of the
dry apota were not touched. The trbde
genet ally regards winter wheat in satis
factory shape, but this is the time of its
critical stage growth. Spring weather
might possibly uncover more damage done
through the winter than the majority are
aware of.
The trade in general has been kept In
a nervous frame of mind the last week:
or more. Price swings have been violent
at times, and frequently without < ause
except that ascribed to technical condi
tions. There has been enormous selling
of wheat since the last time It left the
magic |2 l^el down below the 8*1*. Much
of this selling waa llqnMation. The mar
ket today i* pmbably In a healthier con
dition than it ha* baen At any time alnce

New York. March 11.—There was
enough of the dramatic to the stuck mat
ket action today to stir evert the most
phlegmatic of traders. Professionals
controlled for a fair portion of the day
and were highly favored at first by the
general developments, the first of which
was a break In the St. Paul issues that
. arried the common down to c, and
i he preferred to 16. That spell- ■! re
ceivership. The selling of the two classes
of St. Paul stock was In very heavy vol
ume and this naturally affected t,hc
whole list. Meanwhile the St. Paul bonds
were dumped In big and Utile blocks.
Impending bankruptcy of'one of the great
II anspoi tat Ion systems pot h chill on all
but ihe most seasoned of optimists.
Selling of the speculative favorites was
rather free and declines in some of the
issues were rather broad- li was notice
able. however, thaw f. .S. Steel not only
gave little or no Jtound but bucked the
tide. It had opened at li!2N and re
dimed ■*. Thereafter it either held
around its opening price or j.-limbed u
little.
The heavy selling continued until Ihe
last hour Then big steel led s good rally
under which there were recoveries rang
ing from I to 1 points
One of large contributions to buoyancy
in the afternoon market wa* the surprls
ing announcement of a declaration by
ihe directors of the Western Pacific rail
roal of .« $5 cash and 16 LI ;t pet cent
stock dividend. Some persons hail hoped
for the 5 per cent, but few apparently
had -expected a stock dividend to go
with It.
There was an unusually great demand
for the stock when the news came about.
Total dealings In the, issue for the day
approximated shares. From an
opening of 3S \ it went to f>5, ( losing at
the high, which was 16 points up for the
day. —»
Most of the rails were languid. St
Louis X- Southwestern and the llmk Is
land were exceptions. The aifiounce
nient from both a tureen <«f gratification
over the tetms by which the Rock Island
acquires the Cotton Relt was translated
into market buying In good volume.
Pan American was ihe most activo of
the oils. Doheny's announcement In re
lation io the segregation plan was well
ie< elved
It was another of those days when no
one in the grain market could complain
of lack of action.
Most of the traders appeared to expect
an advance In prices, owing to the sia
tistical strength of wheai 'They were
disappointed. Tim first Jolt cam** from
hat tricky market in Liverpool. Due to
open 2 to i pence higher, it opened off
and closed for the day ut _ *4 pense
To this was added an almost lotak a b
sene* of buying for export. Rromhall
added insult to Injury by putting out r
somewhat bearish survey of the wheat
situation "of th** world.
Cotton was inclined to sag despite the
fa< t that there whs no sign of relief from
the drouth in Texas
Coffee Weak; off 34 to 4S points.
Sugar Finn and - to 4 points up.

I li Inigo Butter.
i hicago, March 11.—With trading dud
the butter market today appeared weak
and an easier undertone wag apparent.
Although supplies of butter on the street
were at 11 light, dealers were pushing
sal-* but showed little ln» llnatlon to
shade prices. Buyers were operating close
to immediate requirements and in many
ra»e« were off the market entirely. The
»entraPscd car market was steady, with
cars rather limited and a fair demand
