Trading in Wheat Again Hysterical; Stiffens at Close — fiurtnatlona In Pit Rapid; ' Cent Regains Early Loss; Oats Slump, Recover) Rye Higher, Itr CHABLm J. LBTDKV. VnlverMl Service Staff Correspondent. Cbioggo, Feb. 13—Hysterical trading again featured tha wheat pit today. The Mav delivery opened 7o higher amidst a wild ruah to buy in reaponse to strength in the foreign market* over the holiday. Later renewed liquidation wiped out ail g«ttna. Tn the laet part of the session The market stiffened and closed with ap preciable gain a for the day. Wheat eloaed 104Vic higher. Mar wheat making the beat gain: oorn waa 1HO lower, date were V4o up to lower, and rye ntied lOl^e advanced. Fluctuations in the wheat pit were sel dom so rapid aa to teday'a trade. Tickers and blackboards wore Invariably behind in the actual quotations of tke pH. Houses with export and foreign connec tions were credited with buying wheat freely on the dipt, while there also was liberal short covering and evidence of fresh support. The seaboard confirmed export ssiss of F.500,000 bushels of grain over the holi day, Including 3,236,000 bushel* wheat and flour; 700.000 to SGT000 bushels oats, .1.126.000 bushels rye and 250.000 bushels barley. Liverpool closed 2\4.'.c lower and ribs were 5 0 20c down. Pit Notes. A big Improvement in foreign demand plus the refusal of Liverpool and Buenos Alrea to follow the declines made here the last few days, brought about a change In sentiment in wheat. Advices from Liverpool told of a much better general demand for the cash article. Locally, the best class of buying sepn in the oit for many days was under way on all weak spots. At the low point today May wheat was off nearly 30 cents from the recent high, and the fact that our wheat is now the cheapest the world over tended to change views on the market. Seaboard advices had It that nearly ail foreign countries were Inquiring for grain. There was ex port business done here and at Kansas City with large-sized bids noted. A report credited to the foreign news and markets department of the Depart ment of Agriculture, w/lh h stated that the world would enter 1925 with a very small carryover, helped to attract fresh buying In the pit. Cash wheat premiums In all markets were steady to firm, ns well as at the aeaboard. while local mill ers told of a livelier demand for flour. Russia was agaijj confirmed as buying Canadian flour. Tl\elr purchases the laat few days have been in excess of 6.000.000 bushels in wheat. Broomhall, the foreign statisticians, stated that Canada was credited with a remaining surplus of around 50.000,000 bushels at the begin ning of 1923. It la safe to say that avail able supplies will rapidly dwindle In North America should foreign demand continue as active as indications suggest. The offering of southern hemisphere grain has been easily accepted. The fact that future wheat In Beunos Aires main tains such a fanny premium over Chi cago appears significant. CHICAGO PRICES. Dull Market in Stocks; Oils Are Strong at Start Little Show of Orderly Move ment; Steels Do Poorly; High Priced Industrials Get Support. Br KIC'HAKB SPII.I.ANK, 1 nitervnl Service Finn m ini hditor. Now York, P>!» 13.—From start to fin i*ii the stork market today was dull and had a sun-holiday atmosphere. There '>as little show of orderly movement. The oIIm exhibited some strength In th« morn ing. but turned dull after the first hour To some persons it appears as if there is quiet accumulation of the oils. The steels didn't lo any too well High priced industrials were supported, hut there was a 1 ist lessneas to everything connected with the market. Cast. Jron Pipe was relatively modeat in its oehavior. After opening at 21K and going r«» 22* it dropped to 205. and closed at 213>4. Of the rails Texas * Pacific showed the most strength. The 8t. Paul issues were under pleasure owing to reports from Washington that, the request for reduction of interest charges on the rail roads debt to tlie government had small chance of being granted. The volume of business for ths day was about the smallest for a full day since the election. It was a tempestuous day, however, for ine grains. There were alternate periods of gales and cleared weather but never was there a ra|m. From start to finish the bull and bear element were in high 'onflirt with prices changing so rapidly at times as to stir the emotions of the most phlegmatic of market operators. All th^ new developments were bullish torn. too. was wild. Oats, ordinarily dull, had a lively time, hut showed little change in price at the close. t'otton was dull and strong as hag been characteristic of it recently, t’offee, ti to )2 points down. Sugar, dull \pd little changed. | New York Quotations s_ New York Stock Exchange quotations furnished by J. S Bache Jit Co.. 22 4 Omaha National Bank building. Wed. High. Low. Close. Close. New York Bonds | V-/ N>w York, Feb. 13. Bond prices drifted irregularly lower in today's trading, which was marked by conflicting move mants iu virtually all groups oil liens showed n burst »»f strength in tna early dealings but failed to maintain their i*x lr» me gains. Buying support was evident for the ob ligations or several foreign countries which have been mentioned as prospec tive borrowers in this market. With Poland scheduled to float a loan here next week, the government's r> Per cent bonds scored further Improvement today,' while Sao Paulo 8s also recorded a frac tional gain. An offering of 25.Owe.(Hit) Argentine treasury notes was quickly sub scribed. * Several heavy spots developed in the industrial list. Warner Sugar refunding 7s lost ground and American Writing Paper issues fell back about 2 points. Marland Oil 8s. with warrants, broke 3%. but the underlying demand for petroleum issues was buoyed up by favorable trade news. Skeliy fi%s closed 1% points higher at 119, after setting a new high record at 120. St. Paul issues reacted in sympathy with weakness of the road's shares, which was Viased on uneasiness over the com pany's refunding plans. The proposed senate investigation of the entire rail road consolidation question discouraged buying of other rail bonds. I nlted Stales Bonds.
