in Slaying Case
"""■“Jury Out 24 Hourg in San

Trial.
—__ •
Bocro Bellome left the couftliouse
st 10:15 /Thursday morning a free
man.
Just 21 hours before, a jury had
Rone into session to determine wheth
er he was guilty of first degree mur
der. Bellome was charged by the
*tate with having shot and killed
i Santoro Salerno, in the most recent
killing In T.lttle Italy. Salem* was
shot when leaving the home of I.ticy
Bell at Twenty-second and Pacific
streets the night of September 17.
l'ntit an hour before the "not
guilty” verdict was reached, the jury
was evenly divided, six favoring ac
quittal and six favoring conviction.
A. clerk of the court read the ver
dict at. 10, Just 23 hours and 15 min
utes after the matter had been placed
in the hands of the jury. Bellume
sat, leaning forward in ills chair, his
swarthy countenance drawn, as the
jurors filed hack to their places in
the courtroom.
A. repressed smile of happiness
crept over his face as he heard the
verdict. He sat quietly in his chair
as Judge Goss thanked the jurors
for their service and they filed front
the court! room.
"Vou ore discharged," said Judge
Gass. •
Bellome rose hesitatingly, apparent
ly not quite comprehending the
situation. Then, as officers of the
court and several Italian friends
shook his head and congratulated
him. a realization of his freedom
came to him and he walked towards
the door.
"Goodby, judge," he said, turning
and taislng a hand and smiling. With
this remark he had practically ex
hausted tits store of English and went
forth without further delay.
It was for the Jury to decide wheth
er Hellome should go free or he sen
tenced for first degree murder. Coun
sel for the state and defense signed
an agreement that manslaughter anti
second degree charges he eliminated
from consideration, and Judge floss
hacl so instructed the Jftrors.
The crowd of spectators, mostly
Italians, which had filled I lie big
courtroom during the trial, was miss
ing when the verdict was given.
There had been rumors of Imiiending
violence due to feeling among Ital
ians. and Judge floss had warned
those attending the trial that anyone
found carrying a weaputt would be

is to be given the manufacturers fur
the cleverness of engineering that
permits them to put an right-cylinder

The models on display at the show
will be equipped mostly with balloon

These tires have found great favor
with the motorist. The problem of
chains and skidding lias been almost
eliminated and the ease and service
that balloon cords give makes luxur

The full-sized balloon has definite

the life of tlie ear and the mileage

of tire engineers.
The balloon tire, If it is to be a
success, must be built with a light

the cushioning qualities that are
necessary for comfort and reellle' ce.
