MATTHEW MARTIN
DIES IN IOWA
Matthew F. Martin, TO, owner of
m.iny properties In Omaha, died
* Saturday at Cherokee, la., where he
had gone for treatment of cancer.
Mr. Martin had been a resident of
Omaha for 40 years. His old home
was at 2018 W ebster street, one of the
arse homes In that district. He was
past noble grand of the Odd Fellows
N'o. 40 of Council Bluffs.
Mr. Martin Is survived by two sons,
Don M. an/1 Frank C. Martin of Oma
ha. Frank Martin lived with his fath
er. Funeral services will he held
Thursday at the Brailev and Dorrance
chapel under the auspices of the Odd
Fellows. Service at the ome will be
private.

fWcago, Feb. 2.—The Chicago Daily
Journal, the oldest daily paper in
Chicago, was left by John C. Kast
mAn, who died last week, to a group
of employes, 11 was disclosed In the
filing of the will today. Kastman was
sole owner. No estimate of the value
of the property was made, hut the
probate judge fixed a ft,(100,000 bond
for the executors.
The entire estate is left to three ex
ecutors, W. Frank Dunn. O. L. Hall
and H. O. Deuler, who announced a
plan of Mr. Kastman under which
Haivy Spencer, Richard J. Finnegan
and O. L, llall would be associated In
the publication.
All those named in the pltjn of or
ganization ware editorial and business
executives of the Journal under Mr.
Kastman.
I Mr. Dunu is business manager, Mr.
Finnegan, managing editor; Mr. Hell,
dramatic critic.
The Journal Is one of the leading
afternoon newspapers, and the oldest
daily in Chicago.

William Mentzer died here at the
age of 82, and whs taken to Spring

first death In the family, seven
children and her husband all sur

The Mentzers were pioneers of
Lynn county, la., were married in
1872, and lived in tIt*t county until
seven years ago, when, owing to
her failing health, they came to this
place to make their home with their
daughter, Mrs. J. P. Man smith. Mr.
Menfzor held the position of care
taker of the fiprlngville cemetery
for 27 years.

Four trust funds; of $23,000 each,
to be used to provide university
scholarships for deserv ing young
men and women of Cass and Potta
wattamie counties, are established by
tlie will of Alice B. Graham, a copy
of which was filed in Council Bluffs
district court Monday. Miss Gra
ham, who was the daughter of John
W. Graham, a pinneW farmer of
Atlantic, la., died In December, 1023,
at Canton, Til.
Miss (Graham does not specify the
number of students to benefit from
(he scholarship funds, but stipulates
that the s#holarshl|> shall he a warded
on a basis of scholastic record and
through 'competitive examinations.
Details of the administration will he
fixed by the Council Bluffs school
.board and Howard B. Heald, trustee
of the estatp. of Canton, la.
The scholarships tire in he named
the "John G. and Lydia Graham
Fund” and the "John W. Graham
fund," with separate funds for both
counties. •
The money for the creation of the
funds will lie derived through the
sale of l.ono acres of farm land
owned by Miss Graham in Pottawat
tamie county and 1,700 acres in Cass
county.
Miss Graham’s estate totals con
siderably more than $1,000,000, ac
cording lo H. G. McGee, Council
Itluffs real estate man, who filed the
copy. His firm is agent for Miss
Graham's property in Cass and
Pottawattamie counties.
The hulk of the estate is left to the
Graham hospital In Illinois.
IOWA MAY RUN
RESERVATION

Cedar Rapids, la., Feb. 1.—The
jurisdiction of the Sac and Fox In
dians may be changed from the
United States to the state of Iowa,
if the state wishes to again assume
control of the reservation at Tama,
according to Dr. Samuel Rlalr, in
spector of the Indian office at Wash
ington. He has been on the reserva
tion for the last week investigating
the trouble which arose when Amos
Morgan blinded Albert Moore, rival
for his wife's affections.
Dr. Blair said some of the Indians
have suggested the. change, believing
they would he better off if they were
under control of the state. In the
opinion of Dr. Biair the recent
trouble on the reservation and the
friction existing between members of
the tribe is due to the peculiar form
of tribal government.

for World Court Support

tive group of New Hampshire profes-|

peal to work for a full record senate
vote for the world court.
The letter is signed by 50 prominent
men of the state.
"We know the president desires ac
tion on the matter and believe the
senate should stand behind hla policies
in view of lhe overwhelming approval
shown by the people In electing him,"

-Kearney, Neb., Feb. 2.—Laymen I>.
Gillette, a blind piano tuner, ended his
life by hanging Sunday afternoon.
Taking a 'wire he looped it about a
rafter, slipped the other end about
his neclc and then kicked away a box
upon-which he had been standing.
Gillette is believed to have grown
despondent over his failing health. He
was 55, and is survived by a wife and
son. ,
