Chicago, Feb. 2.—Long wheat came out
continuously in today'a session, being at
tracted by distinct weakness In foreign
markets and an utter pause in export
trade. Prices swung irregularly to lower
levels, with the May delivery closing be
low the 12 level. Outside interest was
further reduced, but there was an im
pressive sort of buying on the dtps that
frequently took the surplus out of the pit.
Wheat closed 2®3%c lower, corn was
%c higher to %c lower, oats wet e %
off and rye ruled 2%e down.
May wheat broke under 12 about mid
session, but recovered at $1 99. Most of
the news was bearish and therefore it was
natural that the trend should he down,
ward, but good support developed every
time May reached $2.01, and remained in
evidence every %c decline. Commission;
houses were the principal sellers.
The seaboard advised that the foreign
demand for grains was the lightest in
some time, and few sales were effected, i
Liverpool finished 2%®2%d lower.
Corn acted firm, especially in the late
trading. Locals sold most of tho session'
In sympathy with the reactionary wheat
market, but an excellent class of .com
mission house buying was in evidence.
The visible supply for the week increased
1.S86.900 bushels. Demand for cash .corn
was slightly improved. ......
Oats worked higher early_ In the day.
due to reports that # Canada would be
forced to import the* United States ar
ticle, but profit taking through commis
sion houses finally fore ed the market
Rj e was easy with wheat. There was
little evidence of export interest, and
commission houses sold every tune the
market flurried. , _ .
Provisions dropped with grains. Lara
was 12% & 16c low er and ribs were 10c
lower.
Pit Notes
The reaction that has been under way
in the wheat pit the last few days is re
garded ns a natural incident in a bull
market, and, inasmuch as prices last
week were carried up with feverish haste
by the development of heavy public buy
ing, the break now in progress might
possibly extend much further This the
ory has been followed out with no little
bear pressure, according to many pit
traders. Fundamentally the world situa
tion looms every bit as strong if not
stronger than ever .
While the immediate foreign demand
for wheat is alow, the statistics show
that the surplus of North America is rap
idly dwindling. Primary receipts are
larger than a year ago. and have been
for weeks. Unless the crop has been
considerably underestimated the present
movement Is greatly at the expense of
farm reserves. The run of wheat to mat
Uet later on will have to determine.
Visible supplies in this country have
been decreasing much faster than last
>ear. despite the relatively large primary
movement. This is conclusive proof that
the cash wheat ts heading In consump
tive channels with unusual rapidity. Ihe
United States visible supply for the week
decreased over 3.000.001) bushels, and is
now but 10,000.000 bushels In excess of
last year. A little over a month ago it
was 30,000,000 bushels larger compara
llV\Vorld shipments last week of wheat
and flour totalled 19 241.000 bushels or
about 7,000,000 bushels in excess of the
previous week. This explains the in
crease of 0.928,000 bushels in ocean sup
ply. If the foreign reuorts are truly
sent, supplies headed towards Europe will
go Into consumption lust as rapidly from
now on as they have during the last six
months, if not more so. The Swedish,
government is considering the elimina
tion of the import duty on wheat and rye.
This means tnat foodstuffs in that coun
try sre inadequate. _

New York, Feb. 2.—Most noticeable of
all the features In connection with the
stock market today was the decline in
morning buying. Since t li e* advance
started around election time there has
been a large volume of orders from the
country at large when the market opened
each Monday. Whether the recent declines
took tlae edge off bullish enthusiasm re
mains to be seen.
The market as a whole was ^regular,
but fairly strong. Thorn were ^Hmerous
sharp moves in individual stocks but
gioup notion was not general. Sloas
Sheffield had an advance of nearly 10
points and closed points up for the
day, while United States S'eel was com
paratively dull and closed \ down. Ex
planation of Sloss-Sheffield’s rise is in the
exceptionally good earnings shown in the
last quarter of 1924.
Some of the oils made new high while
others held bark.
Various of the rails were fairly active,
and some made new highs. The Frisco
Issues. B. * O.. Seabhard «fc Southern
Pacific, Southern Railway, Colorado
Southern and Wabash did particularly
well while various others lagged.
One of the specialty issues had a drop
of nearly 6 points owing. It Is declared,
to the Illness of the broker who has been
manager of a pool operating In the stock.
All the grains were lower. Foreign de
mand was negligible.
Lard was 13 points down. $
Cotton showed more spirit than In some
weeks.

Trading In southwestern railroad liens
was the most interesting feature of to
day’s market. In view of the merger
prospects in this region, admissions by
bankers, that control some or these
roads rested in the open market supplied
the incentive for accumulation. Frisco.

ahead, but "Katy” adjustment 5a broke
2% points.
Oil company bonds continued to work
higher under the leadership of Skelley

points to 96 on rumors of an increase In
dividend and then yielding slightly on
profit taking Net gains of a point or
more also wore recorded by Standard Oil
