Timely Support Elevates ^ lieat Following Break close Finds Prices at Top for Day and Close to High Mark of Season. By CHARLES 1. LEYDEN. I nitereul Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago, daft. 24.—Timely support en tered the wheat pit today after an early break had corrected the technical condi tion of the market and a brisk rally fol lowed. The close was at top levels for th.* day and Just under the high mark of the season. Winnipeg afforded much «of the stimulus the local pit receive^ Bull ish import of the recent of the dominion government’s final crop estimate was ap parently the reason for the buoyancy of tho Canadian market. Wheat closed \ to l%c higher: corn was unchanged to %c advanced; oats were i£c lower to %c higher and rye ruled 2’t to 3 the up. Volume of trad# locally was consider ably reduced. There wore many in the trade who'played for a setback during the latter part of the day and It may have com# had not Winnipeg displayed Mistuined stability. Covering by Shorts caused the final flurry here. Tho seaboard reported Germany and Italy in tho market for wheat with moderate sales confirmed as being work ed. Liverpool and Buenos Aires closed with small change from the previous day. The undertone of foreign markets how ever, was steady. Corn futures received a better class of buying through several commission houses, ami while the market weakened ai limes, in sympathy with the heavy « a*h situation the close wan fairly strong and higher. Sentiment toward corn is badly mixed and it may take some time for this grain to move permanently higher if it is really going higher at all. Oats were under pressure from scatter ed sources and worked within a narrow range to an irregular close. Heavy realizing in rye failed to stop this grain from reaching new highs. Ex port uuylng was fairly active while com mission house demand was more in evi dence than of late. Provisions moved within a narrow range and closed moderately lower. Lard ■vvus 6 to 12 Vic lower and ribs wer# 22 ^c higher. Pit Notes. It looked as though much of the ab sorption in the wheat pit came from the east and it was not unlikely but that considerable was against export business. There are many reports out that foreign takings consist largely of other surplus grain than ours, but it is a (act that there is appreciable activity at the sea board from day to day and export premiums continue firm. There was no little buying of wheat early, due to reports from the Pacific northwest that 76 per cent of the winter aown crop had been frozen, and that the middle west would be drawn on heavily for supplies sooner or later. The pre carious crop situation In that part of the country may have more of a bearing on the ultimate price trend than generally believed. Good wheat In southwestern markets continues to increase Its premium over the future price. The primary run of wheat the last week was moderately Increased over the previ ous week. Wheat and flour clearances from North America fell off considerably. Decreases In the visible supply may not come as rapidly at this time as has been hoped and for this reason the upward trend of prices may be effected with more or less irregularity. Stocks of wheat at Minneapolis for one day increased 60,000 bushel*. 9 Tied wheat tn the Chicago market sold at $2.10 a bushel today, a new top lor the vear and 4%c higher than the previ ous high. This grade of wheat la scarce tlila season and hs premium la expected to widen to possibly as much as 30 be for* tlie expiration of May. Hard wheat U maintaining its premium* well in all market* and it is this indisputable strength in rash grain at. home and abroad i hat invariably checks in the pit wnat looks like pending sharp break!. Eclipse of Sun Thins Population Around Tickers Trading Without Feature in Brief Session of One Hour and Fifteen Minutes. Ry RICHARD SPIIJAM. litlurNtil Mfrvhf Kinanclnl Editor. New York, Jan. 24.—Wall street's popu lation was much reduced today. T<» many thousands of persons who ordinarily would have been in or about the financial district the eclipse of the sun had a greater attraction than the ticker. Some others hardly thought it worth while* to journey to the financial district, the ses sion for the day having been reduced to one hour and 15 minutes. It was not much of a market even if new highs were sjored in various issues. United States Steel was very narrow in itH fluctuations. Cast Iron Pipe had a Jump of about 2 points on renewal of the re port of a split up of The shares and a distribution to their holders that would reward them for their faith in the prop erty. but toward the close all the ad vance was lost and more, too. American Woolen continued weak. The oils ns a group acted better tlian most of the others and nearly all of them made moderate gains. There was little action in the rails aside from Kansas City Southern and Katy common, and preferred. Best prices ns a rule were seen In the first half 'hour of the session, there be ing a reactionary movement under way toward the close. It was the same old story shout the grains. Prices went up, new highs being made in various instances. Cotton showed more strength than In several days. Coffee unchanged to 10“ down. Sugar very dull and practically un changed. f New York Quotations V-b-- / New York stock ^change quotations furnished by J. S. Bathe A Co., 224 Omaha National Bank building: Fri. High. Low. Close.
