"The American Building congress was born out of the world war.” de clared Robert D. Kohn, leader of the movement, who is in Omaha to ad dress the convention of master build ers at Hotel Fcntenelle tonight. "Its fundamental purpose Is con structive,” he said. There are no petty strifes, no salary adjustments, no labor troubles ever taken into the sessions of the congress. “It has for its aims, the training of apprentices, study of construction methods, and nltempts to overcome unseasonable work. In its member ship there are millionaire contractors ami builders, together with union leaders and men who work under open shop. Al Angle* Studied. "These men sjj*dy the building In dustry from every angle, with a view to the good of the congress not of Its individual members." During the war, Kohn was In charge of housing of ship workers from Bath, Me., to Florida. He said the beginning of hostilities saw three men In the department and at the close there were more than 20,000 en gaged in the work. He declared the building industry Is not unlike others, for everyone be lieves the other fellow is the one in the wrong. The ultimate consumer declares prices sre too high, the builder declares labor Is wrong In de manding exho^bltant wages, labor shakes its finger at the employer, then both of them turn on capital and declare rates of interest are too high. The building congress aims to un derstand the other fellow's point of view and put the whole thing on an honest basis. Kohn illustrated by telling of a recent meeting in Now York where leaders of the ironworkers’ union, also members ot the building con gress, met, with other members of the congress in which two chiefs of other unions, were also present. The iron workers wanted the congress to urge employers to grant a wage in crease to avoid a strike.
