    Heavy Selling of
Long Wheat Leads
to Sharp Decline
Deform! Deliveries Irregular
—Foreign New s Discouag
ing to Bulls; Corn Trade
Broadens Out.
Ilr 1 II Mil es J. I l:\ OKS,
I iiiversiil Service .Stuff ( orrespondent.
t'hk'HKo. Jam 14 1 i• \ - celling of
long wheat, especially in the Mav de
livery. developed on all flurries today and
led to a sharp decline in that month,
finally, while tin* deferred deliveries wen
it regular Foreign news was somewhat
dim ouraging tot the hull.® and mans of
litem were induced to accept profit.-.
Meanwhile corn trade broadened out and
prices moved up .sharply under active
leadership on the buying side
Wheat closed *4' higher to l'^c lower;
corn was %c to ltyc higher; oats were
"-*>• to «4u lower, and !>e tilled le to
1 \ c dow n.
The wheat trend was unusually erratic
and a difficult market to gauge The
peculiar feature of the day was 'he rela
live easiness manifested bv Mav wheat
compared with the July. This was due
to spreading operations tp some extent
iso th# strength in corn was partly
I' "light shout bv trade-® who bought the
j “I In w cereal against sales of wheat.
The seaboard 1 unfit med a fair export
trade, possinly 400.000 to iiOO.OOO bushel.®.
Much of the business waa in Durum wheat
to Italy. Liverpool closed pence lower.
t'orn was given active support anil mov
ed it regularly higher. There was selling
early by some interests that covered later
in the day, while leading bulls supported
the market at times. The movement of
corn is let ling up somewhat and should
it continue the cash situation is likely
to harden Primary receipts were 1,3*3,
oon buahc.s compared with 7f*7.0tJ0 bushels
a year ago.
Data were under scattered selling
1 h"mighout the - salon. This grain is
Louring under the burden of accumu
lating supplies in most mark -t®. The run
of oats not onh keeps up fairly well,
but the demand for it on spot has proven
di lappointing
Kye was legctionary. Scattered selling
n< •» a slow demand. The seaboard fail
id tn discover any export business in rye
put through today.
Provisions met heavy' long selling and
(I iipjied sharply. Lard was 3.»c to 47Cjc
lower and ribs were 7*2^ higher.
Pit Notes.
Sentiment in the wheat trade was
iri'o i* mixed than for some time. t'aMi
wheat in jno.it markets maintained pre
miums. No 3 red locally again sold above
t ft.* $j mark, also in St. Lou s Minne
apolis reported offerings of choice mill
ing wheat scarce with stock* decreasing.
There i® little doubt but that done *
tondition® will continue to exeit a steady
ing influence on the world wheat mar
ket. but there seems to he a tendency
to go slow on the buying aide and wait
tlie consequences of southern hemisphere
pressure.
The Winnipeg market was independent
ly weak all day and clotted 1 \ < lower
tor all deliveries. The relative weakness
there was partly explainable by the fact
that on the previous day t'anada prices
stronger than t'hicago Stocks of
wheat In t'anada are Haiti to he about
80 000.000 bushels less than last year In
nil positions. This probably explains the
Mteugih of the cash market at Winnipeg.
There were reports from the southwest
th.it ttie lower temperatures following the
reipnt thaw was covering nianv wheat
fields with lee again and undoubtedly
will prove detrimental to the crop. There
u-,s considerable buying of July wheat
tigainst sales of the Mnv on this news.
Karlv in the day July wheat sold up to
the best levels reached this season.
The movement of wheat to primary
points continues light This fact Is taken
to mean bv some leading grain men that
the crop this year has probably been
..ver estimated. At current levels It has
been assumed that farmers, if they held
much wheat back, would decide to loosen
up some, but the dally run to terminal
markets Is varying but slightly. This
undoubtedly will lead to continuous re
dm tions In visible supplies throughout
t' e rountr Stock® at Kansas City de
ceased ton 000 bushels th ® week for two
dav® Wheat is being sn'd out of store
In that market on a growing scale.

New York, dan 14—There were two!
heavy Wuvcfc of selling in the stock mar- |

in the morning, had spoilt its force, vari

counter-payment, various groups being
quite well supported.
The averages as calculated by the sta

traded In heavily.
Various issues were strong throughout
the day This list included the equip

the steels, tobaccos, radios, rubbers, aopiu

Money rates were slightly lower, rail
opening at 3 per cunt and closing at 3>*.
while time money opened at 3?* and
and closed at 4 per rent.
News affecting the market was gener

indicated that the rata on debts owed by
the railroads to t h* government would
tie modified. This was taken as hopeful,
particularly In the case of the Chicago,
Milwaukee A- St. Paul.
Dealings were on a libera! scale, trans
actions again, exceeding 2,000.000 shares.
On the curb, as on the big exchange,
there was heavy liquidation. The largest
losses w*re in the oils and radios, the de
