Chicago. .Ian 12—Congestion in May
wheat became more apparent today as
that month led other deliveries and grains
to higher levels, itself reaching a new
top for the reason of fl Sf> Influential
absorption of wheat on the early declines
gradually tightened up the pit situation
and with news malnh bullish the market
advanced with ease finally. Free profit

The trade is paying more attention to
th«* strengthening developments In the do
m«’sf|c wheat situation. The decrease of
4 9,000 tyishols In the United States vis
ible supply for the week was larger than
expected and helped to solidify the buoy
aio \ of the lt.-t Foreign news indicated
F* need of foodstuffs and hinted that
European buying might revive activity al
most any day.
The seaboard confirmed fairly large
sales of wheat and rye to Europe since
Saturdnv. Most of the reports from the
seaboard Indicated that foreigners were
becoming a little anxious. Liverpool

Seaboard huving of rye was active and
while nroflt taking on the hard spots

Pit Notes.
From various parts of the country
rume reports to the effect that mills are
more active and are reporting better
shipping instructions on stuff already
sold out. One of the big northwest
grain men advised that Ihe demand for
flour was greatly Improved. Premiums
for cash wheat locally and ai^ outside
points continued strong with No. 1 red
wheat In this market quotable as high aa
J2 a bushel lare in the day. Early sales
were effected at $1 94.
There were n combination of Influences
that helped wheat higher. Broomhall,
the foreign statistician. advised that
Mocks rtf wheat In Poland. Vienna and
«'if ho- Slovakia are light and that Im
portations are Imperative Private cables
from the cast said that Russia bought
spot rve in Hamburg today, where stocks
of grain are light. Reported rains in the
Argentine interfering with harvest pro
ceeding* also attracted attention
The big reduction in the domestic vis
tide Indicated that the home consump
tion of wheat has possibly been under
estimated Recently a prominent miller
gave his opinion as being ♦hat consump
tion In this country was on the Increase,
and that he looked for a continuous de
mand on this rrop.
Owing to the Increased world ship
ments of wheat the last week there was
:• gain of 1 920,000 bushels on ocean sup
plv The change* in the position of sup
plies suggests that there Is a marked dis
tribution of wheat from producer to con
sumer throughout the world Consump
tion of wheat at these levels in Europe
lx theoretically being curtailed by eco
nomic forces, but If such is really true
statistic* pertaining to the market it
self are not reflecting these develop
ments. Tash wheat In this country and
Europe continues to command fancy pre
miums over the price of futures, and as
long as this continues the bull market
vvll appear on a very strong foundation.

Steel Weakness
Causes Market
to Be Uncertain
Weak-Kneed Bulls Get 1 Bit,
but Buying of Some Mo
tors Is Confident and
Other Storks Strong.
liv Kit'll AK1> sril.I.AM-..
I nlxtiMul Servlte 6In amin I Kditor.
New York, Jan. 12.—'For a goodly part
of in*, session today the stork market
was uncertain and hesitant, probably due
to the disappointing performance of
I'nlted States Steel jn the forenoon. it
was generally expected that the premier
issue would open strong and go sailing
to a new high Instead of strength it
showed some weakness at the start and
dropped back slowly through i he fore
noon. W hot he t this was due to heavy
liquidation following the exceptionally
good figures of unfilled tonnage or mar
ket manipulation the effect was the same.
Weak Kneed bulls got out. Meanwhile,
thare was very confident buying of some
of t lie motors. General Motors and Navh
particularly, while the independent steels,
the oils Nome of Lite equipments and
litera handisets were very strong.
Later in the day I’nlted Stales Steel
stiffened und under heavy persistent buy
ing went through 125, closing at 12 5 4s.
the highest price u lias reached since
1917.
Trading in General Motors was large,
more than 160,00" shares charging hands.
Next in volume of transactions was Mat
land Gil with more than 112,000 It is
understood that the big banking house
which a - united 300,000 shares of Mar
land in 1921 at $30 a share and at the
same time got an option on 336,000 ddi
tional share* at $39, will exercise its
privilege of purchsing the second stock.
Independent steels were stronger than
big steel. The tails as a rule were some
what lower, only a few issues, among
them Missouri J*ai ific preferred and !>rn
ver x Km Grande preferred exhibiting
consistent strength.
He, r .-Koebu- k and Montgomery Ward
continued their remarkable advance,
SeArs-Roebuc k « losing at 171 Vi. It sold
low as 78 \ last >eat and on the first
trading day this year was 163 Va
Once more total transactions on the
•took exchange exceeded 2,000,000 tharea
Cal • one> was at 3 per cent* For
eign ex hange steady.
Liverpool didn't meet our advance In
the grains of Saturday. This did not 1
affect Chi'ago. whet* sentiment seemed
to lie a* strongly bullish as when prices
vve'-t* very much lower.
Mther grains followed wheat and every
thing was higher at the close
Lard was 2 2 to 3" points higher.
» ntton was very dull from the opening/
almost to the last hour. Then it stiff-:
ened suddenly, picked up what small de
cline had In" n made and 'dosed with 17
