Chicago. Deo 30.—Liquidation of gen
aral character dominated the wheat pi
throughout the dav and carried price* Af
sharply. The clone was at bottom level
and showed a loss of 9 9* cents from th
high point of the season, made last Sa(
urday. News from abroad indicated tha
foreign buyers were shunning the ao-calt
ed high priced wheat in the United State
and are filling their requirements for th'
next three months largely in Argentina
Australia and India.
Wheat closed 2 9* to 4*4 cents lower
corn wag 74 to 19* cents down; oats wen
14 to 19* cents lower snd ryt rulec
3 94 to S'4 cents off.
The trade termed the bulk of the whea
celling as of the eleventh hour kind
However, it was believed that many bl>
longs wore quietly getting out of llnei
prior to the expected liquidation after tin
turn of the year.
A little better export trade was effect
ed. The United Kingdom and Norwaj
were in the market for wheat and rye
Wheat sales wera 400,000 bushels and rye
200,000 bushels. Liverpool closed on<
pence off. December wheat In Liver poo
is apparently congested.
Liquidation In corn was attracted b>
the weakness in wheat. Heating orders
to buy through commission house sustain
ed the market most of the day but th€
close was .heavy. The offerings of cash
corn from the country, remain moderate
and the demand for the spot stuff is
satisfactory. Local industries were thf
beat buyers of corn in the local cash mar
ket with the basis on new grades some
what firmer.
Oats encountered good buying at vari
ous times but tho liquidating pressure
gradually overcame the buying power.
The closq was at the lowest levels of the
day.
I.ong selling In rye prevailed and ran
prices Into stop loss orders Loral houses
bought rve In the cast at 414 cents over
tho Chicago May.
Provisions were heavy. Lard was 71.
to 32*4 cents lower, and ribs were 52Vr
cents down.
Pit Notes.
The decline in wheat prices was of
orderly nature. Barring a mid-day re
covery from the opening break prices
drifted steadily but persistently lower ail
•living the session. Commission house sell
in." was on tan throughout and while
support from local operators held the
market for a while at no time did prices
show jhe snap recently noted. Sentiment
in the trade seemed to have shifted uni
formly to the bear side of the market.
Outside market* in this country and
slso Winnipeg were relatively easy com
ps rad with Chicago. The Kansas City
May delivery was independently weak all
dav. It was simulr a rase of liquidation
in all markets with bull news, if there
was any. counting for naught. Cash
premiums locally were steady to weak.
Soot prices in all markets were off with
tho future*.
The primary run of wheat continued
light. There Is no doubt that farmers are
well sold out on their wheat crop and
It is unllkqjv that the primary run will
show much increase after the turn of the
year. This fact Is bound to have a steady
ing effeqi on prices before long but right
now the trade is more concerned over the
lack of der*ti"d for available supplies.
A London • -le to the effect that for
the present tl. * United State* has practi
cally lost ita c.vporr outlet attracted wide
attention in the trade. It stated that the
approximate quantity of grain tonnage
chartered for January. February and
March are 1.250.000 tona of Australia.
1.000.000 ton* for th* Argentine. 300.000
ion* for India 150.000 tt»ns for the North
Pacific and 100.000 tons for the United
States Out of the 2.500.000 tons Charter
ed It shows that only 100.000 tona or 4
r>er rent of the total is for domestic
grain.

Stock Market Is
Very Irregular;
Prices Are Lower
Rails Again Subordinate in
Prominence to Industrials
and Various Special Is
sues; Coppers Lower.
By KI( II\KI> Sl'IIXANK,
1 nlvenwil Smkn Financial Editor.
New York, Pec. 30.—It was r very Ir
regular stock market today, a large part
of the business being confined lo closing
transact ion* over the year-end for either
tax purposes or otherwise. Ah the mar
ket was heavily long, this meant that the
selling influence preponderated. This
necessarily tended to result in lower
prices.
Rails again were subordinate in promi
nence to the industrials and various spe
cial issues. As a rule tlie rails were
lower.
General Electric was very active on the
long expected melon cutting From an
opening at 3U0 It rose to 2U7%, declined
to 29'». closing at 297.
There was little Irregularity to the mar
ket at any time. .Sumo of the oiia were
up Mini some down. Coppers, at a rule,
were lower.
The semi-official announcement from
Washington, that slop* will be taken to
discourage the flotation of French loans
through American banking organizations
if the French government attempts to
evade Its debt to the United States, was
received with approval.
Exertme weakness in tfca grain mar
kets and a <1 ulI and lower action cot
ton market had some alight effect on the
stock market.
Unquestionably the liquidation of the
last few days has improved the technical
position. The market was topheavy. The
declines of several days have lessened
this weight and made the structure more
I compact.
I Foreign exchange was strong. Starling
\ 4.737s—a new postwar high.
Uall money opened at 5 per cent and
went to 5 again.
Uoffee down 30 to 40 points.
.Sugar dull und 1 to 2 points higher.
It was a bad day for the grains. Some
of the Chicago people were hoping for a
big. strong iMarket to ter r-ff the great
advance of the last few months.
But it was not to be. Speculation had
put attention to wheat far above an export
basis.
Wheat opened steady, but soon gave evi
dence of weakness, selling 1^1 %c 1n the
morning. At no time did it show real
strength.
At the clone the market wan weak and
at or near the lowest of ^he day.
Cotton was dull and inclined to drag
throughout *the day. Market information
was scant.
Futures were at rio time active. The
close was at a decline of from 27 to 32
points.
