    Speculative Buying
Sweeps All Grains
to New High Spot
^ ■ ■
Close Marked by Severe Re

An Overbought
Condition .
By CHARLES J. f.KYDEV.
I itlverMl Hmlre Staff Correspondent.
Chicago, Pec. 27—All grains were swept
r»to new' high ground for ths season to
day under heavy speculative buying, but
• n overbought condition developed on the
.irn and the final minutes witnessed a
rather severe reaction which closed wheat
and oats Irregularly. Corn and rye fin
ished slightly lower. Too much bull en
thusiasm wss in evidence and gradually
there spread the belief that the markets
were being carried ahead of actual con
ditions.
Wheat closed '4 cent higher to % cent
tower; com was unchanged to 64 cent
down; oatt were unchanged to ** cent
higher and rye ruled >4 to 174 cent lower.
Selling of wheat after the May reached
183 74 by several prominent commission
liousea uncovered a toppy pit situation.
The selling, however, was not credited
to leading longs.
Liverpool closed 2 74 to 3>4 pence, a poor
response to the great strength in North
American markets of ths past few days,
but this Incident failed to temper bullish
pep early.
The bulk of the reports from the sea
board advised that foreigners were fight
ing shy of North American grain and
seemed to be taking Argentine and Aus
tralian stuff.
Corn was an erratic grain. Covering by
shorts together with fair commission
house buying lifted prices to new' level*
but when the covering ended prices fell
back quickly. The demand for cash com
here was fairly active and the basis
closed firm. At St. Louis offerings were
small with prices up sharply.
A big trad* was on in oats. Commis
sion houses were active on the buying side
most of the day. but profit-taking for
feited gains at the last.
After reaching new tops rys reacted
realizing pressure. Germany was report
ed as having taken rys at the seaboard.
Provisions were strong and active. Lard
was 17 74 to 30 cents up and ribs were
to 70 cents higher.
PH Notes.
Chicago. Dec. 27.—Pressure in the
** wheat nit speculative and cash, haa been
ron-exlstant for aome time. Prior to the
opening today It was felt that wheat
should have a break because of the fart
that Liverpool showed about half the ad
vance looked for. Few dared to sell the
market, however, and this very lack of
pressure seemed to be the basia for the
renewed buying that followed.
December wheat displayed a stronger
undertone then the deferred months
early. The movement of wheat in this
country continues to moderate, ajjd flic
fiish article is bringing fancy premiums
in most markets. Accumulations at
terminal points have been cut down and
ihls development to date haa apparently
m or? than offset the rather Indifferent
altitude that foreign buyers have taken.
A prominent local crop expert figures
that about 70 per cent of the export
wheat moves normally from the southern
hemisphere from January 1 to June 30
'ihls year he believes that Argentine
producers will market their wheat on a.
larger percentage because of the high
prices existing. The probability of Ar
gentine nreasure has made many of the
recent bulls advise caution.
The Winnipeg market showed relative
eteatljness compared with Chicago most
c.f tho day. the May delivery there sell
ing up to 11.9144. but the market weath
ered finally and cloaed relatively easier,
'i here is no doubt but that the move
lent of wheat In thia country and Can
ada is on the wane. Tho visible supply
cannot possibly. It seems, increase fur
ther. but to what extent it will decrease
. ooarcntlv is causing much speculation.

Many Stocks Touch New Highs
Under Influence" of Vigor
ous Sentiment Favoring
Bulls.
Hr RICHARD 8PIIXANE
I ititmal Servlre rinsnrlal Editor.
Now York. Dec. 27.—In various re
spects. the two-hour session of the stock
exchange today was the most impressive
of the year. More than 1.000.000 shares
were handled. That wfluld mean more
than 2.500.000 for n full day.
From *tart to finish the bullish tend
ency was vigorous. New highs were
made by many stocks. All the steels
were sirotig. Republic especially so. The
railway equipments were in urgent de
mand. So were the agricultural Imple
ment stocks. The coppers were buoyant
and some of the motors were in favor.
At no time during the session was
there sign of a reaction. If simply Was
a steady, persistent upward movement
for all excepting the rails
Foreign* were strong, sterling ud about
one cent.
Cotton, after an exhibition of dull
strength for a week, became relatively
spirited and made a really good advance.
There was plenty of action in the
grain markets. In the first two hours
of business, bullish vigorous as pronounc
ed almost as at any stage of the re
markable advance that has been under
way so long. New highs were made by
various of the options.
Then something hit the market. T*os
sibly some of those who have been
prominent In the bull movement tried
to unload a portion of their holdings.
At «nv rate there was a slump toward
the close which wiped out nearly all the
gain of the clay.
Will Street's Interest In the attempt
of the Chicago. Milwaukee At Sr. Paul
to meet its 1924 fixed charges of |2J.
500.000 has been heiRhtened by the earn
ings statement for the II months this
venr showing net operating income of
$1*5.710.908. At this rate It Is expec ted
the road will just about esrn the fixed
charges with a possibility of falling a llt
tcl short of the mark. December load
ings nre reported to be heavy, however,
and with an extra day for loading freight
this month enough revenue may be
brought in to make the years report
sufficient to meet all charges.
British estimates of the world's sugar
crop in the coming season places it at
22.4*»7.000 tons, according to the bankers
trust company of New York. Europe will
produce nearly 2,000,000 tons more gugar
than In the previous season. Total world
production, both cane and beet, now ap
proximate* the average production of the
three years immediately preceding the
war. Trade experts estimate the Europ
ean beet sugar output for 1924-25 will
total 6,961,000 tqns compared with 6.051,
000 tons in 1923-24. The Cuban crop
this venr Is expected to surpass even the
record output of the Inst campaign of
4.062.000 tons, the estimate for this sea
cn being 4,500.000 tons. The bank esys
that the trade looks for a new struggle
between beet and cane sugar as a pos
sibility of the future.
