Woman Testifies 1 "Human Ogre’ Gave ; Her Flesh to Eat Former Landlady Tells Court She Heart’ - ’ of Hacking Slayer of 27. Hanover, Germany, Dec. 8.—Twice he called for a minister to confess, and each time the clergyman refused to answer, Fritz Haarmann, man of many murders, said in court today. This assertion was confirmed by police witnesses and the Inspectors who' led the Investigation into Haar mann's 27 killings. Testimony of police seemed to sup port the Impression that Haarmann was a tool in the hands of Hans Grans, his alleged accomplice, who played on Haarmann's abnormality and weak will. Haarmann’s former landlady, Frau Seemann, testified that six years ago, she heard a sound of hacking in Haarmann's room nnd that later he gave her bones with flesh on them, os stew meat. “Meat” Looked White. She said the flesh looked strangely white when boiled and nauseated her when she ate it. To the testimony of two scientists who examined bottles containing fat and testified that it was impossible to determine whether it was human, Haarmann bowed his mock gratitude and said "Thank you." The judge ordered the removal of ^ the human hones, a huge box of which has stood in front of the bench. Altogether ID® witnesses will be heard, including the fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters of most of the 27 youths he is charged with butcher ing. Excitement High. Public excitement was at fever pitch today because of persistent rumors that the relatives of some of the victims had solemnly sworn to take justice into their own hands and kill Haarmann of the slightest oppor tunity presents. A broad-backed policeman stood in front of Haarmann todaj’. Mothers of the slain boys and men will be confronted with the attic ogre and will be asked to identify their sons' clothing or skulls, all of which were intact. All of the witnesses today, even the women, will be thoroughly searched for weapons. Police guards about the old court building were tripled. " Advisors Deplore Lack of Adequate Aircraft Industry j Mailer of Grave Concern, Ex perts Report; Absolutely Essential to National Defense. Washington, Dec. 8.—T,ack of an adequate aircraft Industry Is a mat ter of grave concern to the govern ment, In the Judgment of the national advisory committee for aeronautics as expressed In Its annual report trans muted to congress today by Presi dent t'oolldge. "An aircraft Industry is absolutely essential to national defense,” the re port declared. "One lesson of the war that will not be forgotten Is that It takes a great deal of money to de velop hastily an aircraft industry almost from nothing. The American people can 111 afford to pay that price a second time. "The government Is concerned that there should be at least ‘an adequate nucleus' capable of rapid expansion to meet war needs,” the report con tinued. To that end It recommends steps to remedy substantially "the existing bud condition," but declared that proposals either to increase the volume of government orders for air craft or to allot such orders without regard to competitive bidding would not meet the necessity. While the air mall service, particu larly with Its present efforts toward night flying, was classed as "the most important development In avia tion today," so far aa stimulating development of commercial aviation goes, the report pointed out that the chief reason for faster commercial flying progress In Europe was a mili tary consideration.
