The Wise Suggestion Mrs. Burlier
Made to Madge.
T went slowly out of Mrs. Durkee’s
guest room. In which my mother-in
law lay, with a fresh appreciation of
her shrewdness and Insight.
She had Instantly realized that the
muse meant to give up her case, and
Mother C.raham had capitulated, hut
in such a manner that tlie honors
were even.
As I went into the hail with her
injunction to’ make the nurse believe
that it was I who had persuaded her
to go hack to bed. T permitted myself
a quiet grin at the way both de
termined women were in Cyrano
fashion, making the "magnificent
gesture," while rarh was secretly
anxious to retreat from the position
she had taken.
I know that the nurse was abso
lutely justified in her determination
to ask to be relieved from the case—
l decision, however, which she had
not yet expressed in words—but I
also knew that leaving a ease was
something no nurse wishes to do,
and I wntehed her narrowly for
some sign of relief at my quiet an
nouncement:
"b'he has finally consented to go
back to' bed, I told her that her ap
pearance would frighten her little
grandson and persuaded her to wait
until tomorrow to see him. I think
von will have no further trouble with
her."
The Nurse Pretends.
"I hope not," she said a bit sourlv,
and I paid tribute to her composure.
There was not the slightest indication
of any emotion in her fare, and the
next instant she gave me proof of
her quickness of thought.
"If you will please stay with her
a few minutes longer," she said
courteously, "I will go down now and
telephone. Dr. Kutnlan did not leave
directions concerning her diet and I
am afraid she may get hungry in the
night."
It was the flimsiest of pretexts anil
I wondered If she thought I accepted
it. But in Chinese parlance It
"saved her fare." and I was careful
to look credulous as T nodded an i<
sent to her request and went hack
Into the bedroom.
My mother-in-law raised herself
upon one elbow as I eame In ami
stared at me.
"What's the matter?" she demand
ed. "Is she going to leave, after all?"
"No, Indeed," I answered smiling.
"But she asked me to stay with you
while she telephoned. She said she
had'to ask the physician concerning
your diet.”
"Humph!" my mother - in - law
snorted violently. "I'll bet I know
what she a doing. She« holding
down (he receiver hook with one
hand while she holds the receiver
with the other. She's too old at this
game to have to ask about diet. And
[ suppose she didn't want you to
guess that she was bluffing about
leaving."
"You Mean—"
I suppressed the comment that the
nurse had not been bluffing a few
minutes before. Kach woman f»lt
herself the vlrtor In the contest she,
had waged, and It behooved the Inno
