Omaha Bee Opens Annual Shoe Fund for Poor Kiddies Many Youngsters in City Need Footwear to Keep Out Slush and Snow; Teach ers Send in Names. This will be a tough winter on the school boy or girl who hasn't a sub stantial pair of shoes. When the snows come, with their attendant slush and mire, It Is a luck less child Indeed who Isn't protected from the elements. And one of the most Important preventives of bad colds, pneumonia, grippe and other Ills Is to have the feet snugly clad. For that reason, year after year, The Omaha Bee has conducted a free shoe fund for school children. The co-operation of the teachers has been sought, always cheerfully obtained, so that many needy youngsters have been well shod during the cold winter months. December Is. Here. December Is now here, and so, on Monday the shoe fund got underway. Contributions, large and small, are the order of the day. The method employed for the prop er distribution of shoes Is a practi cable one. V Teachers In the public schools send In. from time to time, the names of pupils whose shoes are worn out, poorly patched or too well ventilated. J. B. Carver, city truant officer, han dles this matter, and sends orders for shoes to those who need them. These orders may be filled at shoe stores, and the school fund is hilled for them. No Overhead Expense. Omaha people have responded cor dially to this fund every winter. An Inquiry as to when the 1924-25 fund was to start came In Monday. Said the writer of the letter: “When I was a kid I knew what It was "to tramp through the snow to school on shoes so thin that my feet were constantly getting wet. Count me In when the fund starts this year. I think It is a worthy cause.” There is no expense attached to the raising of this fund. Every penny goes for shoes, and each child Is fit ted according to his own size. Let's get started. Contributions should be sent to The Omaha Bee Free School ‘ Fund, Omaha, Neb., and checks and money orders should be made, ou the same way.
