Los Angeles. Cal., Oct. 21.—The suit
*f the United States against the Pan
American Petroleum and Transport
company; the Pan-American Petrol
eum company; Edward L. Doheny.
head of both companies, and Edward
Li. Doheny, jr., his son, was opened
here today.
In Its suit the government is at
tempting to force the cancellation of
»il leases executed in favor of the
Doheny companies, giving them
rights to the Elk Hills fields of the
naval oil reserve units in California.
The basts of the federal suit was
formed as a result of the senate oil
Inquiry and the details surrounding
Ihe government's contention that the
leases should be abrogated occupied
the greater portion of today's hear
ing.
Headed by former Senator Atlee
Pomerene of Ohio, the array of legal
talent hired by the United States at
torney general to conduct the case,
opened the session before United
States District Judge Paul J. Mc
Cormick with a complete statement
of facts, pointing out the evidence
which had been uncovered, resulting
in the filing of the suit.

BY COURT DECISION
Cleveland, O., Oct. 21.—Warren S.
Stone, president of the Brotherhood
of Locomotive Engineers, today Issued
the following statement on yester
day's United States supreme court de
cision that railway employes who
joined the shopmen’s strike In 1922
were entitled to Jury trial when
charged with contempt of court.
"Every good citizen, regardless of
whether he belongs to a labor union,
ought to be gratified that the United
Stats* supreme court has upheld the
provisions of the Clayton anti-trust
act requiring jury trials for workers
charged with contempt of court dur
ing industrial conflicts.
“The decision throws an Interesting
sidelight upon illegality of ex-Attor
ney General Daugherty's Injunction
against the striking railway shopmen.
It was upon the appeal of some of
these victims of government by In
junction that the decision has been
rendered.”
