Crop News From Canada

t*liii'ago, Oct. 21.—After a series of un.

today. Volume of trade was not broad,
but on the dips the market repeatedly

• lose Unfavorable crop news from
Canada, slight betterment in the export
demand and relative firmness in corn
throughout helped to bring about the
recovery V" the leading cereal.
Wheat closed 74 to l*4c higher; corn
"us 1 *4 to 1 %c higher- oats ware 74 to
•*c higher, and rye ruled %c lower to
'a(, higher.
^lo-Nt of the session the market pre
sented a tired and worn-out appearance,
•specially on the flurries, but it came
with surprising vigor and at the last
looked flarly strong. Although there have
bepn numerous reports from the hea
iVfTflrd that foreigners were less Inter
ested In our wheat, It Is to be noted that
vbe breaks this week uncovered "good"
bid*.
The seaboard confirmed total sales of
1.250,000 bushels wheat to Europe, large
ly hard winters. Italy was the best buyer,
with the United Kingdom buying sparing
ly. Moderate sales of corn were made
«o Tb lfast and Rotterdam. Liverpool was
off 5^4 to 4 pence.
The seaboard confirmed fair Hales of
> o.rn for export. Some messages indicate
that before the coming crop year is over
'lure is likely to be a world shortage of
'his grain. Weather conditions over the
bell "ere less favorable and many dreary
reports as to the condition of the crop
were forthcoming. Locals sold corn on
' he bulges but the better commission
house buying witnessed finally forced
hurts to cover.
t»rs trailed other grains up and down
"•thin a narrow range and closed on a
'•■illy and higher. Cash demand for oats
• as moderate, with the basis unchanged
to %c lower.
Rye experienced several erratic ewings
•^nd closed uneven. The export demand
!<"• this grain 1 # s let tip considerably and
the northwest is shipping rye this way.
Provisions were irregular at the dose.
I ard was 2 be higher to 774c lower and
ribs were 10 to 1 2 74c up.
I*it Notes.

>ne explanation for tills persistent rush
grain from the farms of ttie north
*. is that farmers possibly figure there
‘s something back of the talk that repub
'ican money is keeping values up and
• rtirsequently are marketing as much
.'ain as possible prior to election, not
-hing to tak% unnecessary chances This
planatlon however, is not given a
greet amount of credence.
The American spring wheat harvest
Jhis year was a bountiful one. Farmers
• • that part of the country were hard
hit In 1923, and with conditions the re
verse now the> arc rapidly paying off
debts and accumulating cash. It is safe
s.-.y, however, that this liberal run of
grain from the farms cannot remain at
uch unprecedented volume much longer.
.V- is customary at this season the
world's available supply is increasing,
•tFor the week the increase was 13.906.000
bushels against 15,694,000 bushels last
‘ar. The movement of grain in North
' merica is much larger than this time
i “t year and the fact that supplies are
m»t gaining proportionately indicates that
*he grain is going into consumption un
usually fast. The total world supply now
1s place.I at 2') 1.940,000 bushels, compared
virli 193.250,000 bushels last year. Broom
riiill allows for a world carryover of 64,

Rails Bullish and

of Stock Market
Car Loadings for Year Near
Highest on Record; General
News Favorable; Foreign
Exchange Favorable.
H.v RICHARD HPIM.ANK.
I'niverbal Hervice Financial Editor.
New York, Oct. 21.—Hails were again]
the feature of the stork market today
News in relation to them was strongly . |
bullish. Car loadings for the year total]
1,088.000, which is near the highest on i
record. The Atchison system makes the]
remarkable snowing of larger loadings
than last year despite the slump In sum
mer traffic. Union Pacific shows
economies in operations by which despite
a considerable Georeaso m gross income
there is an Increase in not.
Low price rails rather . than standard
systems were in highest favor. There
was such unusual demand for St. Louis
A San Francisco issues that they led
the market In volume of transactions.
Wabash “A,” Chicago, Great Western
preferred. New Haven, Texas A Pacific,
Pittsburgh & West Virginia, and St. Paul
preferred were in demand.
Those persons who went short of Cast
Iron Pipe on the court decision of Mon
day evidently had a. change of mind
overnight for the stock came back
quickly in the early trading.
General news was favorable. Copper is
In much better demand. Sules at 13%c
are reported.
The sugars were soft. German beet
sugar is being offered In the American
market for the first ttme since 1920. The
price Is understood to be 6.90c a pound,
November delivery. Cuba refined sells
around 7%.
Oils did nicely. There Is a very good
feeling in regard to them.
Bethlehem Steel again made a new
low. this time going to 39%.
One of the dullest and most uninter
esting Mocks on the list Is U. S. Steel.
It seemed to be pegged around 107.
Transactions aggregated 815,700 shares.
Halls advanced on an average 2-5 of
a point.
Industrials advanced on an average
7-10 of a point.
oFrelgn exchange steady.
Cotton acted modestly considering the
bullishness of the market news.
Professionals had the grain markets to
themselves. Liverpool, due to come 2%c
down, opened 3c to 3 %q down, at 2 p. m .
was 3%o, to 3 7fcc down, and closed 3%c
to 4c down.
Foreign buying was more hesitant.
Chicago opened lower and showed little
strength until well toward the middle
of the day when short oovering. based
probably on the lower temperatures in
the grain belt, lifted prices moderately.
Toward the close there was a sharp up
turn. and the market was fairly active
in the last quarter of an hour.
Wheat closed from %c to lV*c up for
the day.
Corn was l%e to 1 4c up.
Oats %c to %c up.
Rye %c down to tyc up.
Lard was unchanged to 8o down.
