Ford Advertises.
1 College Education.
Perfect Love, Maybe.
2 Per Cent Govern.
By ARTHUR BRISBANE
_s
Henry Ford’s business, pros
perous everywhere, gains in pro
portion more rapidly abroad than
in the United States.
Business men who say, “my
business does not need advertis
ing” might study Henry Ford's
methods. His products are well
known, yet Ford advertises, sys
tematically, elaborately and con
stantly here and abroad. Hi3 ad
vertising is good because he in
trusts it to professional advertising
men.
Henry Ford knows how foolish
it would be for an advertising
ugent to undertake automobile con
struction without consulting an ex
pert. He also knows that it would
be foolish, in him, to do his own
advertising.
There is not a business in the
country, except that of the prison
keeper, that couldn’t be doubled in
volume by the right advertising
agent. Even cemeteries advertise,
and prosper by it.
“If your business isn’t worth
advertising, advertise it for sale.”
E. W. Lord, dean of the Boston
University College of Business Ad
ministration, says a college educa
f1 tion is worth $72,000, and the col
9 lege man is at his best at 60,
whereas the laborer is done for at
60.
The average untrained man can
earn $1,200, the high school grad
uate, $2,200, the college graduate.
$6,000.
Interesting figures, hv which,
though some college men nre at
l heir best at 60, many are worth
less when they come out of col
lege. And while some college grad
uates earn $6,000 a year, other
men with no college education earn
$6,000,000 a year. And there are
many college men who do not earn
anything. o
A college education may be valu
able, but it depends»on the persons
educated. You can’t inject educa
tion as you do merphine, and have
it work.
I.a Follette complains "two per
cent of the population rule the
whole country.” True, but that is
nothing. Less than two per cent
of La Follette rules the entire La
Follette. His body weighs per
haps ICO pounds, and the whole
body is ruled by part of his brain
that weighs less than one-quarter
of one per cent of the total
weight.
Two per cent of the population
always has ruled and always will
rule, probably. The business of
the crowd is to make the two per
cent rule in the interest of the 98
per cent, not merely in their inter
est and that of their hangers-on.
The couple who announced that
they had discovered “perfect
love,” each leaving wife or hus
band in consequence, are now mar
ried. In a year they will be able
to tell you whether that love was
really “perfect” or not. They may
learn that making two other hu
man beings unhappy is not the best
foundation for anything “perfect.”
Thirty actors called upon Presi
dent Coolidge, had breakfast at the
White House, told their best jokes,
sang their best, songs, and almost
made the president laugh.
Opinions change with time. Not
so long ago, in Puritan America,
the reception of “Atta Folk” at the
White House would have ruined
any president politically. Less
lhan two hundred years ago when
an actress died, she couldn’t be
buried in consecrated ground, but
was put in a hole at the cross
roads. The world learns gradu
ally.
The fact that Japan has seven
teen flying machine factories work
ing day and night begins to inter
est this country. The seventeenth
district association of the Ameri
can Legion of Texas asks its mem
bers to write their senators and
congressmen urging “the develop
ment of aviation as a means of
national defense and the establish
ment of a department of aviation
separate from the Army and Navy
departments.”
The Pensacola Journal devotes
almost the entire editorial page to
a picture of the latest gigantic
^ flying machine built for Japan by
^ German workmen in Denmark. In
side of five years the coast of
California will be within 24 hours
of Japan. The fastest flier needs
only increased fuel capacity to
cross the Pacific in 24 hours now.
Lamentably and ridiculously be
hind other nations in flying ma
chine development this country
begins to show some interest in the
one problem important to national
safety.
Army engineers plan a lighter
- than-air machine, five times as big
as Shenandoah, to carry, suspended
from below, a fleet of small flying
machines.
These would be carried below
the great dirigible somewhat as the
mother opposum carries her young
ones on her back.
At the right time,* in war, the
little heavier than air machines
with powerful engines and very
swift, would be released from the
slow moving mother air bont to at
tack enemy cities, battleships or
airplanes.
That plan is interesting, but
there ought to be some real build

injr. Exactly what Japan has done
anti is doing is what we should do.
The Japanese bought in Europe
samples of all the best machines.
Every new improvement that
comes up they adopt. They have
17 factories turning out flying
machines now.
That isn’t done merely for the
pleasure of spending Japanese
money.
It may not he aimed at the
United States, if you like, but
whatever her present plans may
be, Japan, with her air program
perfected, would be in condition to
raid and destroy the cities along
the Pacific coast. A flying ma
chine doing 300 miles an hour
could leave Japan at sunrise and
24 hours later wake up San
Francisco with a bomb.
