• nii ago, Oct. 7.—Wheat rushed rapidly
forwaru during the early minutes of trail
ing today, the stability of foreign mar
kets being the Influence, but broke back
as tremendous profit taking by prominent
operators was encountered. Only the con
tinued export buying of domestic grain
Mistained the market finally. which
showed prices at irregular levels for the
nay. Kye lacked the stimulus of export
- support and dropped sharply.
Locally, wheat closed %o lower to %c
higher, corn was 2%c up to 2V- higher;
• >ais were %c lower to %c higher, and
!>'■ ruled 2 % «• off.
The swings in wheat were fast and wide,
a«d had th^ majority guessing. Too

Commission houses bought wheat cany
and then after the Initial sharp advance,
s vamped buyers with wheat. On the way
down stop loss orders were executed and
together with some hedging pressure
added to the load on the market.
Kxport sales of wheat were placed at
L’.ftuo.OOO bushels with the United Kingdom
and Italy the best buyers. Sales of rye
were modest anil there were tumors that
native German rye was underselling ogrs.
Liverpool finished % to 1% pence hlghe.
Short covering In corn during the last;
hour was active, and prices were bid up
sharply. Early the market sold off
under abrupt pressure. The growing crop
outlook in the main does not improve, and
many traders are taking a small amount
of merchantable grain on this crop, and
•■\peut to set* receipts at primary polnta
dwindle the next few weeks.
Liquidation in oats ran prices Into stop
loss order* eurl>. and prices dropped
quickly. Good buying developed on the
dip. being partly stimulated ‘by advices
$ front the s* aboard that foreign demand
had revived.
Kye dropped over 7 cents after an open
ing bulge due to material long selling
• in the extreme break export interest de
veloped and the market staged a good
romflback from bottom lcveU*. Late in
the day Norway asked for offers on 30,000 j
tons of rye overnight, amounting to up
u i* rds of 1,000.00ft bushels.
Provisions closed irregular. Lard was
unchanged to 12 %c higher, and ribs wete
10c lower to 17%c higher.

mained generally bullish, although reports
did persist to the effect that foreign de-]

The sales effected at the seaboard also

The primary movement of wheat re
mains heavy. Receipts et northwest
pnints especially are continuing large.

much grain had been held up on track
while the embargo was In effect, and now
that it is lifted, terminal a.rivals are
larger. Advices from the interior of i he
northwest state that the peak of the run
has been long past.
The world’s available supply of wheat
and flour for the week Increased 016.000
bushels. The total is 17f'.OOO.OtM‘ bushels,
against 163.1 15.00ft bushels last year.
Clearances of grain from North America
during the rest of the month and from
now on until the close of lake navigation

New York. Oct. 7.—Much h market ns
there was today waa made up largely of
the morning session. Wail street seemed
to be more interested in the afternoon in
the hail game at the Polo Grounds than
it was in the prlc$ fluctuations of securi
ties. The greatest roar that has come
out. of the stock exchange in months was
that which arose when the ticker told that
Goslin of Washington had made a home
run.
There probablv were more brokers at
the Polo grounds in the afternoon than
there were in the financial district.
Professional selling was In evidence
earlv in the day. This brought on a
moderate decline but the leading issues,
such as American Gan. U. S. S!«el and
Baldwin acted ns If they were propped.
Rome of the rails sold off easily, Illinois
Central in particular.
A report that the statsment. of IT R
Rteel ns of September 30 would show
the best condition as to its business since
last May had some effect on general
sentiment.

ly weakened Toward midday the mar
ket stiffened again hut in the after
noon it eased off again Ul?c lose being
at from **c up to ,4c down.
Winnipeg declared 'hat all the grains
looked as if they had beep bulled to ex
haustion and the recent selling was much
better than the buying.
Corn .acted better than wheat through
out the day, being fairly firm.
Oats were dull.
Rye. which seems to have lost favor
with speculators, was very heavy.
Lard was 2 to 13 pointa up.
Chicago reports that big operators who
were prominent on the bull side have
switched and now are pounding the mar
ket vigorously.
Cotton was dull all days ns hat been
a « haracteristlc of the market on the
ever of the bureau report.

Pacific refunding 5s and Norfolk A West
ern convertible 6a each losing a point
and several others yielding large frac
tions. Adams Express 4s advanced *
