.'Lentherman. former Sunday echool
teacher, was found guilty today of
being the ring leader of tlie mob
which tarred and fethered Dorothy
Grftndon Inst July.
The jury deliberated more than 18
hours. Lentherman was found guil
ty of sitting and abetting Mrs. Mary
Shank, one of the confessed leaders
I of the crowd, which attacked the
young girl.
Leatherman was declared not guil
ty. however, on a count charging him
with actually pouring tar and feath
ers on Dorothy’s naked body.
Sentence Suspended.

Other Trials Soon.
The trial of the other men Indicted
with Mrs. Shank and Leatherman will
he called in court next Wednesday,
Storm announced.
In the little county jail, two young
girls. Dorothy Grandon and her com
panion, Mabel Mills, rejoiced when
they heard the news of the verdict.
’’It’s my turn to laugh now,” Doro
thy said. "Harry Leatherman Is get
ting what he deserves. He didn't
• how me any mercy and I hope he
gets the same treatment. Leatherman
was having a good time when he
brought that mob out to tar and
feather me last July. He thought he
would get away with It. He didn't

Picnic to Be Held October 9

has been set as the date for the
first annual Dodge county old set
tlers' picnic to he held at Itidgeely.
The picnic will start, at 19 in the
morning and continue throughout

picnic, a basket lunch, will be staged
In Ridgeley hall at Ridgely, the cen

in Taxation Investigation
Ponca, Neb., Oct. 2.—Dixon county
supervisors voted to co-operate with
William IT. Smith, state tax commls
aloner, who Is gathering informa
tion as to property values in connec
tion with suits brought against the
state by various railroads over their
taxes.
According to lettera sent to the
various county hoards by Governor
C. W. Bryan and Attorney General
O. S. Spillman, railroads are resist
ing in part the assessment of their
properties by the state hoard of
equalization and assessment.

cabinet maker of Cadillac, Mich., as
the skilled woodworker would not
consent before to have his portrait
printed.
Now that the flight is over, how
ever, the proud fatlipr says he wants
the world to know that “Johnnie”
Harding has a father who has hren
watching his son's progress with
pride and satisfaction.
Chekiang Forres Retreat Two
Miles in Vicinity of
Sungkiang.

Shanghai, Oct. .1.—An offensive for
which the invading Kiangsu force*
attempting to take Shanghai have
been gathering men and munitions
for the past three days, started last
night southwest of Sunkiang, at a
point 35 mile* south of Shanghai. The
defending Chekiang troops were
forced to retreat two mile* to new
positions after intensive night fight
ing in whieh both sides employed ar
tiliery.
According to an observer who re
turned from the front, the Chekiang
troops were pushed hack to positions
five miles southwest of Sungkiang.
The railway station at Sungkiang
last night was a bedlam of terrorized
residents, the remnant of thousands
of refugees who had previously fled
to Shanghai.
As the offensive of the Kiangsu
troops proceeded it assumed the as
peet of a general engagement, the ob
server said.
On the front west of Shanghai oc
casional firing was reported, but the
Kiangsu offensive expected in that
area today by the Chekiang forces
had not developed.

“Flying Bathtub” Entered in
Contest Event at Day

vances have been done to bring com
mercial flying to tlie point where It
will lie more universal. Aerial “fliv
vers," tiny-appearing planes, some of
them powered with motorcycle en
glnes, furnished the greatest Interest
of t he program.
Fight of the small ships, many of
them "home-made." were to compete
for tlie Dayton Daily News trophy.
Lleiit. John A. MacReady, McCook
field, famous altitude and distance
flyer, planned to fly a “baby bomber"
with an engine of 18 horsepower.
Kttler.ne Dormoy, technical engi
neer at McCook field, will pilot nis
“flying bathtub,’’ which travels 50
miles on a gallon of gasoline. The
plane has no fuselage and the fuel
tank is underdeath the top wing.
Another entry will be a Mix flying
plane with a 15.2-horsepower motor,
piloted by Jack Lass of Dayton, who
was Lincoln Beachcy’s mechanic. The
ship Is 12 years old and Is one of
the oldest and smallest planes in the
country.
A model airplane constructed by
Robert V. Jaroa of the University of
Chicago, remained aloft for 10.14:2
minutes in the Mulvlhlll model trophy
race, setting what la said to be a
new world's record.
Jaroa, representing the Model Aero
Club of Illinois, also aet a new world's
record for distance, according to
announcement.
Hia glider traveled a mile and a
half. The best previous distance was
fi.000 feet and the last record for time
5.5 minutes.
