President in Address Says
He Will Urge Tax
Reduction.
Washington, Sept. 24.—Service and
mutual consideration were set up to
day. by President Coolldge as the
guiding principles in relations be
liVeen the government and business,
in a talk to delegates to the conven
tion here of the National Aasoclatlon
of Retail Druggists.
The president again pledged him
self to an administration guided so
that "there may be reduction of taxa
tion and harmony in our foreign re
lations, that there may be peace and
prosperity."
Pursuance of tlie policy of serv
ice, Mr. Cooolidge said, will bring
"less and less interference by the
agencies of government” in business.
It should be the aim of government,
lie added, to make the contacts be
tween business and tile administra
tion as few as possible, and to reduce
the burdens and annoyances to the
minimum which is consistent with
conservation of the broadest public
interest.
-e* Applauds Moral Kleinent.
The president applauded the Intro
duction into business transactions of
the "moral element—common inter
est between merchants and customer,
the sense of responsibility on both
sides,” and this, he declared, has been
notice able in "your own business.”
Mr. Coolldge addressed the dele
gates from tlie south portico of the
White House.
Senator Moses of New Hampshire, !
chairman of the republican senator
lal committee, reported to President
Cooolidge today that the senate cam
paign as well as tlie national, was
progressing satisfactorily. lie said,
however, that an attitude of over
confidence would he dangerous.
A recent survey, Mr. Moses said,
allowed that republican senatorial
candidates had fighting chances in
Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma,
Colorado i\nd Montana. Outside of
the southern stales, he declared re
publican candidates in all other states
had a safe upper hand.

C. O. P. Chairman Says Parly
Clad to Be Rid of Ea
Follette.
Rochester, X. Y., Sept. 2-1.—-The
duty of the republican party in the
”■*« present election "is to keep Amerirn,
to keep it «h we have It, not as it
would become if Its people pursued
phantoms here and abroad or if the
Hryans and I.a Follettes were allowed
to work their will,” said former State
Senator Nathaniel A. Klsberg today,
in his address as chairman of the
republican state convention.
The republican?, said Mr. Klsberg.
serf glad to have their enemies out
in the open, “and I. for one, am
grateful that Senator La Follette has
now done nominally what, he did
long ago actually and that the repub
licans are rid of him at last.”
The speaker referred to Senators
La Follette and Wheeler as forming
a “hybrid” ticket, one being a ‘'rene
gade republican” and the other »a
"renegade democrat.”
"They are fit associates for each
other,” he said, "in their readiness
to barter economic truth for votes,
In their willingness to divide the peo
pie Into two classes and to substitute
for national solidarity a mutually hit
ler class distrust; fit associates In
their efforts to Impair the safeguards
of the constitution and the power of
the courts to enforce these safe
guards in defence of Individual
rights.”

MACDONALD W
KIND OFL )ER
Noted for Frankness; Knows
Value of Publicity to
Statesmen.
Tk>ndon, Sept. 24.—A new order of
British statesmen has been instituted
by the labor government.
J. Ramsay MacDonald, British pre
mier, stands alone in the realm of
British statesmen, for none of his pre
decessors have ever approached his
democracy, frankness or candor.
Dike most statesmen, MacDonald
is interview shy, simply because of
several unfortunate and inopportune
interviews attributed to him. But
MacDonald is not siiy of newspaper
men; in fact, he Is one of the few
British statesmen who have realised
the value of publicity.
Sitting behind his desk in the
foreign secretary's office, with papers
and dispatch boxes piled on all sides
of him, MacDonald occasionally re
ceives newspaper men. lie is a
worker who will not be interrupted,
and if the newspaper man enters
when he is engaged In some interest
ing "task he may stand, or sit, un
noticed for several moments. The
work finished, MacDonald looks up,
lifts his glasses and smiles qulxicai
ly. There is something about his air
that is friendly, but at the same time
gives warning that there is business
at hand, and the newspaper man
must hasten.
MacDonald Is one of the very few
politicians or statesmen In Europe
today who favorably impress Ameri
can newspaper men. He answers
questions with a readiness and a
frankness that is disarming. He
speaks his mind and places implicit
trust in the newspaper man that his
confidences will not he betrayed. He
never hedges, He gives his views
frankly, and there Is no dodging the
issue. It is not necessary to press
him, for he rises eagerly to ques
tions.
When a question interests him he
leans well forward, peering into tlie
face of his questioner, rubbing his
hands and adopting an attitude that
is almost evangelical; for he is so
sincere in his beliefs that he appears
to want to convince all questioners
of their correctness.
Although the premier has a sense
nf humor and a wit that Is active, he
doesn't resort to the old dodge of tak
ing cover behind a funny remark. He
regards newspaper questioners as
men bent on serious business, and
even though he may be faced with an
ill stated or an empty question he
gives a dignified answer and never
resorts to the old practice o*f making
a witty, biting reply in order to con
fuse and embarrass his questioner.
