Inherent Strength of Wheat

Bv CHARLES 4. LEYDEN.
Vnlver*Hl Her vice Staff Correspondent.
Chicago, Sept. 22.—Inherent strength of
the wheat market was forcibly reflected
1n today's market. Prices held during
tne first hour as corn slid downward and
then moved rapidly forward, closing at
1 lop levels. Heavy buying for eastern and
export account absorbed the offerings
early and shorts covered urgently at the
Inst. itye showed greater stability than i
wheat. Oats and corn recovered with
the leaders.
Wheat closed 2^i®3^*o higher; corn
was Pic lower to l7ic higher; oats were
“mc. lower to higher, and rye ruled

Indications that Kuropa is coming after
wheat and rye with growing eagerness
apparently attracted more confident spec
ulative demand Foreign crop news was
remarkably bullish and had its effect.
Yields In France and Italy are material

ners in a slow trade while Winnipeg fol
lowed the local market up.
The seaboard confirmed export sales of
1.000.000 bushels wheat and 2.000.000
bushels rye. Some exporters thought
that as much as 3.000.000 bushels wheat
wore taken In two davs wheat and rye
sales have been over 6.000.000 bushels.
Corn sold down to the low point reg
istered a few weeks ago and then held.
Commission houses were liberal buyers
of the deferred months on the break and
during (he last hour corn was hard to
huv with advancing prices. The move
ment of old corn Is Increasing. and the
lack of adequate cash demand weighed
down the September delivery. The new

Large Increase
in Rail Shipping
Brings Strength
Favorites Quiet for Days Re
turn to Action in Stock
Market, Demand Gen
erally Excellent.
I«V KlrltAKI) SPII.I.ANK.
I nlvcrwil Service Financial Editor.
New York. Sept. 23—Car loadings* of
railroad* east and west, north and south,
continue to increase. Together with this
there is a steady gain in net income in
comparison with gross. Under the in
fluence of the excellent showing of the
transportation lines the stock market
opened today with a good show of
strength. American Can, United States
Steel. Haldwin and some other specula
tive favorites which had been quiet for
days, returned to action. There was an
unexpectedly good demand for stocks and
the marker took on a broader aspect
than it. had displayed for a week. The
baking, the biscuit, the leather. the
motor truck, the utility and various of
the specialty issues were in excellent de
mand.
nils and coppers were the principal
laggards. A few of the oils mail* small
gains but the majority were soft. Report*
from the industry continue disappoint
ing. Copper, too, suffers from over-pro
duction.
Transportations for tha day aggregated
*06,500 shares.
The rails mad* an average advance
of % point and the industrials an aver
age gain of 9-10 of a point.
Foreign exchange was slightly lower.
Money was unchanged.
Cotton was galvanized into unexpected
life and activity by the government re
port Thia made condition 65.4 and indi
cate*! crop J 2,656,000.
A* with cotton so it was with the
grains From the bearish influence which
has controlled the market recently there
was a sharp change of sentiment. Liver
pool at the time of our opening was
from *4 to 64 pence up.
There was some hesitation early In the
session but thin did not last long, the
market being heavily oversold News
as to corn was bearish. Nebraska re
ported favorable weather and from other
sections the news was that the corn
yield would be bigger than predicted.
A better foreign demand for wheat and
rye started price* up. This soon led to
covering by shorts under which the mar
ket developed more strength than It had
Shown In a week Under the Influence
of the movement in wheat, corn moved
tip also.
Wheat closed 3*4 to 3 64c higher: corn
from 1 He down for September, to lHc up
for May; oats hi to %c up, and rye
from 2% to 4He up.
Lard advanced 10 to 15 points.
